Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 17: Post custodial death row that has cast a shadow on ties of ruling alliance partners, even as Congress is trying hard to save its image through damage control political statements , it is faced with a piquant situation from within the party- the pestering over pressing demand from workers and cadres at all levels over rotational Chief Minister . While in simple terms it implies the Congress down the whole heirarchy in the state unit strongly seeks a change of guard by the end of current year, there is still no word from Congress High command. And ironically, all the stalwarts facing this question almost everyday at present is throwing the ball straight into the High command court.
From party's General Secretary and iconic youth leader Rahul Gandhi to stalwarts like Digvijay Singh , besides the veterans at the local level PCC chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz and now the visiting Union Helath Minister and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, all leaders are facing the same music- a strong urge and aspiration to have a Congress Chief Minister in place when three years of Omar Abdullah led regime comes to close by December end. While Prof Saif-u-Din Soz faces this pestering almost in every political function organised either in Valley or Jammu from the party workers, Azad faced this intesenly this time during his current visit to the state. Congress leaders and workers on Monday raised the issue of rotational chief minister in Jammu and Kashmir before Azad during the latter's meeting with them at Nehru Guest House here.
While it is a routine for the visiting senior leaders to hold meetings and interaction with the senior functionaries and the workers who count, these days it is becoming little tough to handle the latter over this issue , sources said adding that the leaders are finding hard to answer the straight and leading questions which have become harsher , full of 'warning tones' by the workers of serious fallout in the backdrop of present political situation with regard to equations between the allies. While the leaders like Prof Soz have been handling the workers' growing urge in a politically mature manner with explanations that relate to political realities at ground level, Azad during his interaction with Congress district presidents , is said to have avoided the answer today. He instead advised the party leaders and workers to strengthen Congress at gross roots level, sources added.
However, despite his bid to avoid, it were the functionaries who matter in the party hierarchy insisted as why the need for change of guard is strongly felt at all the levels in the party. Strongly vouching for a Congress CM for next 3 years, some leaders also contended they were being continuously ignored in the present set up as a result of which their political constituencies are getting badly affected. The functionaries and second rung leaders have given hints of 'unease' and growing discomfort and discontent, echoeing complaints and grievances over NC led alliance government, it remains to be seen whether Azad, who remained on three day visit to the state , would effectively convey this to quarters that ultiemately matter in ensuring what Congress workers and leaders want.
