Stock adequate food grains before onset of winter: Union Minister | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 18: Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Prof. K. V. Thomas today asked State Government functionaries to ensure smooth supply of food grains and its stocking in far-flung and inaccessible areas before the onset of winter. The Union Minister was addressing a high level meeting of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, convened to review the availability of food grains and essentials in various districts of the State. The meeting was among others attended by Minister for CA&PD and Transport Mr. Qamar Ali Akhoon, Minister of State for CA&PD Mr. Shabir Ahmad Khan, Commissioner Secretary CA&PD Mr. Pradeep Gupta, Special Secretary CA&PD Mr. I. A. Ashai, Director CA&PD Kashmir Mr. Abdul Wahid Tak, a team of senior officers of Union Ministry of CA&PD, General Managers of various Oil companies and senior officers of state government. Expressing his concern over the non-availability of godowns in some of the districts of state, the Minister stressed on ensuring speedy construction of godowns in these areas so that stocking of food grains could be stored for winter months. Regarding the demands of providing additional food grains both in BPL and APL categories, the Minister directed fresh survey in the uncovered areas so that the deserving families are extended ration at minimum rates fixed by the government. Earlier, the CA&PD Minister Mr. Qamir Ali Akhoon raised various demands before the Union Minister, which inter-alia included enhancement of ration quota to J&K in view of rise in population. He appealed for giving special attention while fixing scales of ration for different areas of the state. Responding to the demands of state government, the Union Minister asked the state functionaries to re-submit the proposal for setting up of consumer courts in various districts of the state. He assured that the central government will leave no stone unturned in according approval and granting funds for the purpose. Prof. Thomas also emphasized on raising state consumer welfare fund in the state. He also announced special financial assistance of Rs 60 lakh for setting up of consumer helpline. Commissioner Secretary CA&PD gave power point presentation on the achievements registered by the department and apprised the meeting about future plan of action regarding distribution of food grains of various areas of the state.
