People’s Democratic Party (PDP) patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that time has come to seal a peaceful, realistic and acceptable solution to the Jammu & Kashmir tangle and change the history of the sub-continent for good. “We are at the threshold of creating a new history in the region, and God forbid, if this initiative fails, history would never forgive us, “he said.
Addressing an impressive public meeting here today, Sayeed said the Congress has the experience and capability of resolving the challenges facing the country and it has settled similar problems in Mizoram, Nagaland, Assam and Tamil Nadu.
“I am sure Congress would grab the opportunity and settle the issue of Jammu and Kashmir as well,” he said and added that the agents of change sweeping the sub-continent are offering a chance for permanent and amicable resolution of the issue.
Describing the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh’s visionary speech at Amritsar on Wednesday as ‘path –breaking’, Sayeed said the changing equations in the region offer, the prime minister not only a challenge but also an opportunity to take a giant leap towards making India more at peace not only with its neighbors but also with itself.
He said there is a visible and perceptible transformation in the attitude of the Pakistani leadership as well and the recent statements emanating from there are an indication of this change. “The recent initiatives from both sides represent not only a fundamental but possibly an irreversible change in the way the Kashmir issue is being seen and handled,” he said and added that instead of outrightly rejecting the ideas of Pakistan President General Parvez Musharraf, the same should be considered on merit.
Sayeed said that even within Jammu & Kashmir, the ground-realities have undergone a sea-change due to the pro-people policies of the Coalition Government and the masses have started reposing their faith in the democratic institutions. “But I must tell you this change was not possible without the support of the Congress high command, who, despite facing difficulties sometimes, stood by the policies outlined in our Common Minimum Program,” he said and added that the initiatives for peace and change succeeded only through the complimentary role of the state and the Central Government.
For the success of the ongoing initiatives, Sayeed said cessation of hostilities within the State is vital. He said the Pakistani Government must use its influence with the militants to completely put an end to the violence in the state and ask them to join the dialogue process to facilitate peaceful resolution of the issue.
“We have seen enough bloodshed, now lets give peace a chance,” he said, and added that the pain of the State people has reached a level where the hope of peace is sure to triumph with overwhelming local support.
The PDP Patron said that given the peculiarity of the Jammu and Kashmir issue, a lasting solution must have the ingredients of political, economic, regional, ethnic, cultural and social factors to the satisfaction of all the concerned parties, not only within but outside the State.
Sayeed said PDP has been not only advocating the need for a political resolution of the Kashmir problem, but as a part of the Coalition Government it is striving for the economic development of all the three regions of the State and its people.
He said some major initiatives have been taken during the past four years to build infrastructure in critical areas so that people reap the benefits of development. He further said that the coalition government will do every thing possible for the honourable return of Kashmiri Pandits to their native places and added that Kashmir is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits.
Complimenting his party workers for giving strength to his caravan, Sayeed said all along his political carrier his main source of strength have been his workers.
Speaking on the occasion, senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig felicitated the party leadership from Jammu region for organizing such a massive rally, he said Mufti Mohammmad Sayeed has emerged as a leader of the masses in all the three regions of the State as he has, both within and outside the Government, struggled for their honor and dignity.
Baig said the pro-people policies of the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as a Chief Minister have been widely acknowledged as these made a huge positive impact on the ground situation in the State. He further said that the difference of opinion is the essence of democracy and every party and individual has the right to the express his views and suggestions on any issue, such views, suggestions should not be viewed a s a major threat to the coalition.
“Those who predict the fall of the government are day dreaming”, adding that coalition is all set to complete its full term.
