Tsunami warning system to be in place by next year
7/31/2006 7:09:39 PM
New Delhi: Prospective victims of cyclones like tsunami will be able to get 30-minute escape time after the cyclone detection radar system is put in place in the country by next year, Rajya Sabha was informed today.

The government is in the process of acquiring 50 more Doppler Weather Radar, costing Rs 23 crore each, to forecast tsunami-type cyclones, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said during Question Hour.

"We will be able to tell in 20-30 minutes what is going to happen," he said on advantages of the new warning system.

The indigenous version of the Doppler Radar has not been effective and the government has decided to import 50 Weather Warning Radars, Sibal said.

Four such Radars have been installed in the country, he said.

In reply to a query, the Minister said to augment the network of meteorological observations in Orissa, Automatic Weather Stations are planned to be set up in the state.
