Congress likely to suffer more humiliating defeats
Anti-Congress Wave -- I

JAMMU, Oct 18: The humiliating defeat of the Congress party in the just-held by-elections in four states, Haryana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar should not surprise anyone. That the Congress was destined to bite dust was a foregone conclusion. By-elections were also held in Tamil Nadu in the two assembly constituencies. Counting will be taken up on October 20 and there is no doubt whatever that the ruling AIADM of J Jayalalithha would win both seats hands down. The DMK and the Congress know it full well. They have to reckon with Jayalalithha and they just cannot because both these parties have lost their face in Tamil Nadu.
The Congress candidate for the Hissar Lok Sabha constituency forfeited security deposit. It was a clear verdict against the Congress and the UPA. The Janata Dal-United (JD-U) once again established that its leadership continues to enjoy the people's confidence in Bihar. Victory of the JD-U candidate in the Siwan district's Daraunda assembly constituency was nothing but a reiteration of the people's faith in the government headed by Nitis Kumar. The JD-U retained the seat. It was a positive vote and a vote against the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) combine. It was not a really a significant victory for the JD-U-BJP combine in the sense that the people of Bihar discarded the Congress, the RJD and the LJP long ago; they hate these parties because they indulged in loot and plunder when they were in power and also because they divided the society in the name secularism to which they were, and are, not committed.
If the Congress got badly trounced in Haryana, adjoining Delhi, and Bihar, it also got drubbing of worst form in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), which is spearheading the movement for separate Telangana state, inflicted a crushing defeat on the Congress. The TRS candidate won the election by a huge margin of 49,889 votes. Remember, the seat was won by the candidate who had resigned from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and joined the TRS only recently to identify himself with the cause of Telangana. His victory was very significant in the sense that it clearly suggested that the mood in the region is against the Congress. Other factors, including corruption, high food prices and inflation, did work against the Congress party but the fundamental factor was the people's anger against the Congress and the UPA which are opposing the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and creation of Telangana state out of it despite the solemn promises made by them to the contrary. It needs be noted that all the legislators belonging to the Telangana region are one as far as the demand for the creation of Telangana State is concerned.
The defeat of the NCP-Congress candidate at the hands of the BJP, backed by the Shiv Sena-Republican Party of India, in the Maharashtra's Khadakwasla assembly constituency was far more significant. The BJP won the seat despite the fact that the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, who happens to be a cousin of Shard Pawar, and the Congress had put in their all to win this prestigious seat. That the NCP and the Congress failed to register a win in what is called the pocket borrow of Shard Pawar clearly indicated the direction the wind is blowing in the crucial Maharashtra state. The victory of the BJP in what is known as the pocket borrow of Shard Pawar has been described by many a commentator as "surprising".
The jubilant BJP, whose own track record is baffling and disappointing, has hailed the victory of its candidates - one of its own, and two of its allies - as the "people's verdict against a "corrupt Congress government at the Centre". As for the Congress, its arrogant leadership stressed that "none of the seats was in its strongholds". What a silly response! But what more could it say? (To be continued)
