State govt policies are anti-farmers, allege BJP MLAs
10/19/2011 9:06:34 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 19:The NC-Congress coalition in the state has adopted a total anti-Kissan approach. Poor farmers are suffering huge losses while the middle men are gaining. This was alleged by BJP MLAs Sukhnandan Kumar and Sham Choudhary, while addressing a press conference at party headquarters on Wednesday.
The MLAs said that the farmers of Jammu province are made to suffer every year as the state government and its Agriculture department has adopted a very negative approach towards the helpless farmers as a result of which they suffer after every harvest. Citing few examples, the MLAs said that the farmers do not get their fair price of the produce as there are no procurement centres. There existed the procurement centres in the past but the same were closed about twenty years ago and till date no step has been initiated to ensure that these centres are made functional.
In absence of procurement centres, the farmer is left with no other option but to sell his produce at a rate fixed by the middle men, who sell the same at very high rates in the markets.
Marh MLA Sukhnandan Kumar, while briefing about his personal meetings with the officials of Food Corporation of India (FCI), said that none from the state government attended the National level meet called for providing the requirement related details for setting procurement centres.
Whether it is desilting of canals, non- procurement, non availability of seeds and pesticides or inadequate irrigational facilities, the concerned departments only wake up when farmers come on roads and hold protests and organize dharnas.
The MLAs warned the government to not test the patience of the farmers and set up procurement centres within a week failing which the farmers in thousands will come on roads after the Diwali festival.
