Congress likely to suffer more humiliating defeats | Anti-Congress Wave -- II | | Neha JAMMU, Oct 19: The situation as it prevails today across the country clearly indicates that the national mood is against the Congress or that anti-Congress wave is sweeping across the country. The Congress is in a shambles in the major Indian states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Its position in Orissa, Uttranchal, Jharkhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Kerala, Chhattishgarh is highly precarious. In West Bengal, the Congress is at the mercy of Chief Minister Mamta Bannerjee, who cannot be depended upon considering her mercurial nature. She can leave her ally in lurch anytime. The North-East presents a mixed scenario with the Congress having its support-base, particularly confined to Assam. The political health of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, which together return to the Lok Sabha 10 members, is also not good. The Congress in both these states is vertically divided into several groups with each one of them pulling each other's legs. The fact is that the Congress and the UPA have lost their sheen and become highly unpopular. It would be a miracle of sorts if the Congress wins even one hundred seats in the general elections as and when held. The elections could be held even before May 2014. In 2009, the Congress sprung a big surprise by capturing 206 seats. It won by default. Several factors have contributed to the unpopularity of the Congress and the UPA. Congress and UPA have been hit "rock-bottom" in popular standing. They are at the receiving end because they are being directly held responsible for what the commentators call "record-breaking scams". Anger of the people over "sky-high prices" and never-ending inflation is palpable and it is growing by the day. The middle and the lower middle classes, which constitute majority, are more politically charged than ever before. It became evident from the groundswell of support Anna Hazare's crusade against corruption received in April and August-September this year. The agrarian community, especially the small and marginal farmers, is up in arms against the Congress and the UPA. India has been witnessing the poor farmers committing suicides on an unprecedented scale and on almost daily basis. The ugly nexus between the Congress/UPA and the dishonest corporate houses today stands thoroughly exposed. The economic and fiscal policies of the Congress and the UPA are corporate-centric. The reasons are not difficult to fathom. Our import and export policy has benefited the countries like China and crippled the Indian small scale industries. The number of persons living below poverty line has increased manifold during the past six to seven years. Unemployment problem has also assumed alarming proportions. The external policy too is in a shambles. It is the United States and Pakistan which are practically guiding the Indian Foreign Office and determining our foreign policy and the result has been that India has become an object of ridicule in the eyes of the international community. The internal security is far from satisfactory. Terrorists and extremists, including Maoist terrorists and Kashmiri separatists, have become so emboldened because of the inefficient confused Home Ministry that they are causing deadly blasts at regular intervals and killing and maiming innocent civilians. The Congress and the UPA have annoyed the majority community owing to their belief in fake secularism. An impression has gained ground that the Congress and the UPA are guided solely by the minority interests. The manner in which the Congress and the UPA have been handling Jammu and Kashmir and the scourge of terrorism have made the majority community believe that the Congress could go to any extent for the shake of vote-bank politics. These and several other factors plus the fact that the UPA has become dysfunctional and that the senior cabinet ministers are fighting among themselves have all contributed to the unpopularity of the Congress and the UPA. The UPA is in a state of paralysis. It has become increasingly defunct in the eyes of the people. The Anna factor and the nature of the Congress leadership are the two additional factors and these are important factors. They have the potential of decimating the Congress and the UPA. Indeed, these circumstances are immensely rewarding for a national-level opposition party. All in all, it can be said that the Congress and the UPA are on their way out. Obviously, it's advantage BJP-led NDA. One may or may not appreciate the emerging scenario but the fact of the matter of the matter is that the Congress and the UPA are doomed. Those who say that Rahul Baba would tilt the nation's balance in favour of the Congress party are living in a fool's paradise. The Congress ship is drifting towards the rocks very fast and the Congress steersman Rahul Gandhi is just not able to rescue the sinking ship. (Concluded) |
