Widespread discontent, disappointment in Omar's raj
Mehbooba In Fight-To-Finish Mode - I

JAMMU, Oct 19: PDP president and Leader of Opposition in the Asembly Mehbooba Mufti is in a fight-to-finish Mode. Her immediate targets are the already beleaguered Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the NC whose popularity graph is falling with each passing day. She has unleashed a no-holds-barred campaign to expose the Chief Minister, his government and the NC's double-speak. Her one-point agenda is to lower the position of the Chief Minister and his father Farooq Abdullah in the eyes of the people of Kashmir, who are already, it appears, quite unhappy with the system of government handed down to them by Omar Abdullah and expand her party's support-base in Kashmir Valley and the Muslim-majority areas of Jammu province. She is convinced that now is the most opportune time for her to corner, expose and destabilize Omar Abdullah and his what she calls the non-existent but the most corrupt and irresponsible government and prepare a ground that induces the Congress and the UPA to intervene in the state so that Omar Abdullah and the NC are thrown out of the government and the PDP, the Congress, the Panthers Party are able to form government in the state.
It is important to note that Mehbooba Mufti and her father and party's patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and other PDP leaders have seldom in the past made any adverse comments on the Congress. Farooq Abdullah recognized this fact at the beginning of this month after holding an important meeting with some senior party functionaries and a few ministers to take stock of the situation arising out of the controversy surrounding the death of NC loyalist Syed Mohammad Yousuf. Furious and visibly upset Farooq Abdullah had said: "The PDP wants to remove NC from power at all cost; PDP attacks only the NC and not the Congress; and PDP is power-hungry and it is vitiating the atmosphere in the Valley to regain power in the state". Farooq Abdullah does make a point when he says that the PDP could go to any extent to dislodge Omar Abdullah and fill the space to be created by Omar Abdullah.
It is an established fact that the Muftis enjoy the support and confidence of many a senior Congress leader in New Delhi who would always want to cut the NC to its size and see the Muftis controlling the levers of power in the state. It needs to be recalled that the PDP had in December 2008 and January 2009 offered unconditional support to the Congress, as it hated the idea of the NC coming back to power, but with no result. The constituency of the PDP and the NC is the same and that's the reason why both the parties indulge in the politics of competitive secessionism and communalism in Kashmir to identify themselves with what could be legitimately termed as a communal constituency.
Any way, the ongoing power struggle between the two main Kashmir-based parties is one of the two striking aspects of the situation as it prevails today in Kashmir and this struggle would become more and more bitter and ugly in the coming days. The NC would try its level best to cultivate the Congress high command (read Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi) so that Omar Abdullah is not dislodged on or before January 4, 2012 when he completes three years in office. The PDP, which wants to decimate Omar Abdullah and the NC, on the other hand, would strive to the hilt to engineer a coup against Omar Abdullah and manipulate an alliance with the Congress and the Panthers Party. Mehbooba Mufti knows it full well that the Panthers Party stands for the dismissal of the Omar Abdullah government and an alliance with the PDP and the local Congress leaders and workers are for the revival of the 2002 power-sharing formula between the Congress and the PDP. Both the Panthers Party and the local Congress leadership have intensified their activities calculated to ensure the collapse of the Omar Abdullah government even before the NC completes three years in office. It is this, plus the prevailing widespread discontent and disaffection in the state, which have emboldened Mehbooba Mufti to unleash a relentless oust-Omar Abdullah-campaign. Shrewd and vocal as she is, Mehbooba sees in the prevailing environment a god-sent opportunity to strike back and dislodge Omar Abdullah and the NC. (To be continued)
