BJP's antigraft movement weakened by Yeddy | | | The jubiliation in the BJP camp over the way voters mauled the Congress in the just ended bypoll in four Assembly constituencies in various states would have not been a low key affair had not its leadership been rocked by the former Karnataka Chief Minister,B.S.Yadyurappa's alleged involvement in a major land scam which led to his arrest.Whatever credit Yadyurappa had earned for having carved out a niche for the BJP in the south has evaporated like dew drops with the advent of the dawn. That Yadyurappa has been the BJP's strongman in the south is indicated by the way the party leadership stood by him when a section within the party went against him.At one stage the BJP leadership did not take cognisance of the complaints about Yeddy's alleged involvement in the land scams it did not want to lose a leader who had,for the first time, kept the BJP flag flying in Karnataka. As things started crystalising the BJP leadership had no other alternative but to distance itself from Yeddy and that too when the Sangh Parivar had been in the forefront of those who have launched antigaft movement in the country. One may call it an irony of fate because the time Yeddy was arrested senior BJP leader,L.K.Advani,had started his Rath yatra in support of the anti-graft campaign or movement. This way Yeddy 's arrest has cast a shadow on the Rath Yatra because the BJP leadership felt embarrassed with the incident.People were seen giving a smile at the Yatra as they were sarcastic about the purpose of the yatra. The party that is quite loud in shouting against congress patronised corruption is itself in the soup following one of its chief Minister's having been jailed on charge of alleged involvement in the land scam.Hence there was no other way for L.K.Advani to caution the BJP against any complacency in campaigning against graft. He has even stated that if incidents of corruption surface in the BJP it cannot take on the Congress as far anti-graft movement is concerned. No doubt the Congress led UPA Government has been in a thick soup over 2G spectrum and other scams the image of the BJP led Governments in Uttrakhand and Gujarat and the BJP-Akali Dal Government in Punjab is not too rosy to send shivers down the spine of the Congress. Hence if the BJP,which continues to face the leadership crisis at the national level, nurses a wish that it would replace the Congress headed Government in the centre in 2014 Lok Sabha elections,if they are not held earlier than the schedule,it has to come down heavily on those party leaders whose track record on different types of malpractices is adverse. A mere wish for regaining power is not sufficient for the BJP to unseat the Government headed by Manmohan Singh.Well there is time for the Lok Sabha elections and the BJP leadership does not need to feel amibitious for power in the centre.Instead it needs to galvanise its efforts for registering its presence in a big way in Uttar Pradesh where the Assembly elections are to be held next year. The time is short but the stakes are high because if the BJP wins a sizeable number of Assembly seats in UP it can help it in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. In reality Assembly elections are to held in seven states, including UP,Punjab,Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh in 2012. In comparison to the Congress the BJP has one major stake. It has to see that it does not lose power in Uttrakhand and Himachal and ensure that it is able to share power with the Akalis in Punjab. It can receive support from team Anna provided the BJP is able to clean its house.
