After batons, police detain contractors | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR:, October 20 : KDNN Police on Thursday detained several members of the Jammu and Kashmir Central Contractors Coordination Committee when they tried to take out a march in Lal Chowk area here.
A day after police foiled the JKCCCC's march to civil secretariat, dozens of contractors assembled at the Mushtaq Press Enclave here this afternoon and tried to march towards Lal Chowk. However, a heavy contingent of Armed Police swung into action and detained several of them, including JKPCCCC president, Farooq Ahmad Dar.
The contractors allege that they are paying taxes on gross basis, while as the law says taxes have to be collected on net basis. They also demand that the government relieve JKCCCC from paying double service tax on execution of developmental works.
They also accuse the government of discriminating with Kashmir region and diverting funds meant for developmental works in the province to Jammu.
The JKCCCC had set up a deadline to government to address their 'genuine demands' before October 19 and threatened to boycott all developmental works and submission of tenders.
