Widespread discontent, disappointment in Omar's raj | Mehbooba In Fight-To-Finish Mode-II | | Rustam Jammu, Oct 20: As mentioned, Mehbooba Mufti has upped the ante to ensure the collapse of the Omar Abdullah-led coalition government. There is no doubt whatever that the next few days would witness the PDP leadership raising the pitch and exposing the present government. The process has already started. What she said on Tuesday and Wednesday about Omar Abdullah and his government indicates her intentions and establishes that the battle-lines are clearly drawn. That Mehbooba Mufti has turned extremely hostile could be seen from the charges she has been leveling serious against Omar Abdullah and his government. Some of the charges include (1) Syed Mohammad Yousuf was "killed when he threatened to expose"; (2) "ministers and middlemen are happy with the Chief Minister as they are given free hand"; (3) "ministers and middlemen have been accumulating huge wealth"; (4) "the NC has ruined the state by speaking not only in one but in three different tones"; (5) the NC leadership "speaks in one tone in Srinagar, another in Jammu and an altogether different tone in New Delhi as per their convenience"; (6) the "Chief Minister is more busy in saving his chair and, hence, how can he be expected to deliver for the welfare of the people?"; (7) the present regime as total failure"; (8) "youth of the state had pinned their hopes on young Chief Minister but today they feel ditched and cheated and the government jobs are being brazenly auctioned"; (9) "backdoor appointments have been going on unabated"; (10) "centrally sponsored poverty alleviation schemes have failed due to mis-governance and rampant corruption"; (11) "undeserving people are taking benefits of schemes and programmes meant for BPL sections of the society". These are all grave charges. And, what she has been saying against Omar Abdullah and his government is what everyone in the state, barring those sharing the loaves and fishes of office and enjoying patronage, has been saying for quite sometime now. Leave aside for a while the bitter opposition of an overwhelming majority of people to what the PDP terms as "self-rule", "peace with dignity", "supra-state measures" and so on. Everyone in the state has come to believe that the present dispensation is not only "corrupt to the core" but also "arrogant, insensitive, inaccessible and untrustworthy". Some call it a "regime of loot and plunder." The fact of the matter is that there is widespread discontent and disaffection among all in the state, except those entrenched in the establishment and those close to them. One would immediately appreciate those who say that the plight of the people in the state was never so pathetic and miserable as it has been since January 5, 2009, when the Abdullah dynasty recaptured power. It is a statement of fact that things assume dangerous proportions and people feel totally ignored whenever the NC comes to power in the state. This is what a peep into the history of past over 63 years clearly suggests. The fierce power struggle between the NC and the PDP is, as mentioned yesterday, constitutes only one of the two striking aspects of the situation as it prevails today in the state. The other is the positive attitude of Mehbooba Mufti towards the criminal justice system as is in vogue in the rest of the country. This aspect is far more significant considering the fact that Mehbooba Mufti subscribes to an ideology that seeks a dispensation outside the Indian Constitution. People may accuse her of indulging in double-speak; people may also accuse her of turning unscrupulous in order to cut her political adversary (in this case Omar Abdullah) to his size. They can accuse her, but, then, this is what politics is all about. Whatever people may say is not important in the present context. What is important is what could be termed as a positive change in the attitude of Mehbooba Mufti (read PDP) towards the Indian laws. This is not an overstatement. This is a statement of fact. Take, for instance, what she said repeatedly during the past two days. She, inter-alia, said: "Had the laws of the country (Indian criminal justice system) been applicable in Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah would have been behind bars like former Karnataka chief minister, BS Yeddyurappa, and met the same fate as former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Ashok Chavan, especially after the Haji Yousuf episode". What Mehbooba Mufti said for whatever reasons needs to be appreciated by one and all because it is perhaps for the first time after many, many years that a Kashmir-based leader has commended the Indian laws. One can only hope and pray that Mehbooba Mufti and others in the PDP would start afresh and work for stronger and closer politico-constitutional ties between the state and New Delhi taking into account the fact that the Indian laws have started producing the desired results. Delhi's Tihar Jail and Bangalore's Central Jail are the two big proofs. It is also hoped that the PDP would discharge its duty towards the people as a principal opposition party saying goodbye to the politics of emotional blackmail and politics of self-rule and focusing its attention only on the issues of governance. Will the death of Yousuf in mysterious circumstances turn out to be a blessing in disguise? Let's wait and see. (Concluded) |
