‘Tree-talk’ held in SKUAST campus | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Oct 21: As part of ongoing ‘tree-talk’ campaign in Kashmir valley, Nowsheen ‘tree-talk’ was today organized in SKUAST, Shalimar Campus today. Vice Chancellor SKUAST Prof Tej Pratap addressed the ‘tree-talk’ participants comprising of Dean Forestry Prof Nazir Masoodi , Prof G A Bhat , Associate Prof Dr S A Gangoo, Dr T H Masoodi , Dr R Baniyal, Dr Vaishno Dutt, Dr M A Siddiqui Department of Floriculture, J A Mugloo, Monisa Banday and other scholars. Prof Pratap while said that SKUAST arboretum had introduction of rare tree species like Occidental Plane, Aromatic Bird Cherry, Soapnut Tree, Holly Oak, Foxglove Tree, Kiwi fruit, Pistachio tree, Japanese Persimmon and Cherry Laurel, in addition to several ornamental and medicinal species of high economic utility. Prof Masoodi underlined the need of having joint projects with Forest Department in the sphere of conservation of endemic flora of Kashmir. He elaborated possible causes of large scale drying of conifers in the forests citing the example of Pahalgam forests. Senior Forest officer O P Sharma highlighted role of snow melt in the survival of alpine trees like Bhojpatter, Betula utilis whose papery bark was used in Kashmir to write ancient manuscripts before Akbar introduced paper in the valley.
