What about present VC of Jammu University? | Probe Against Mattoo | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 21: The decision of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the behest of State Governor NN Vohra to order a probe into the alleged irregularities committed by former JU VC Amitabh Mattoo has been widely welcomed by one and all, especially those in the university, including teachers, students and administrative staff, minus those who enjoyed Mattoo's "patronage". Everyone, barring a selected few, had "suffered enormously" during the Mattoo's highly controversial regime. Sources say a "thorough probe, when completed within the stipulated period of ten days, would surely vindicate those who had demanded an enquiry into what they had called financial irregularities as well as irregularities in matters relating to human resource management, including appointments and promotions". "The very fact that the Governor proposed and the Chief Minister endorsed the proposal is itself an indication that things were very bad when Amitabh Mattoo headed the institution for six long years," the sources further add. The adversely affected people are, however, at the same time, bemoaning that the Governor, who is Chancellor of the university, and the Chief Minister, who is pro-Chancellor of the university, "have acted at a time when Mattoo has already completed his tenure". Mattoo these days is in Australia on some official assignment. Their grouse against the Governor and the Chief Minister is that "they knew everything but they did not act on time". They make their point by referring to the "Comptroller and Auditor-General's report" as well as the "report prepared by the committee appointed by the University Council of which the Governor is the ex-officio chairman". Their whole argument is that "had the authorities acted on time, the situation would have been saved and Mattoo brought to justice". It would not be out of place to mention here that NC MLA (Marh constituency) Ajay Sadhotra had raised the issue on the floor of the assembly and demanded action against Mattoo. He had levelled grave charges against Mattoo. It is a different matter that the authorities that time did not consider it prudent to order a probe into the alleged irregularities. Mattoo, who had not only "vitiated the atmosphere on the campus by patronizing persons with doubtful credentials and organizing pro-separatist events" but had also "thrown all the university norms to the wind to please certain political elements and his cronies," was allowed to go scot-free much to the chagrin of the faculty, students and administrative staff. Ironically, it was Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah's father who came to the rescue of Mattoo. Farooq Abdullah made a statement that "Mattoo" had "committed no wrong". According to sources, "Farooq Abdullah visited Amitabh Mattoo's official resident to show solidarity with him". Apart from Ajay Sadhotra, a number of senior teachers had also written to the concerned authorities about what they called the "misdeeds" of Amitabh Mattoo, but they failed to evoke any response. Rather, a committee was constituted against a particular teacher, and that, too, at the behest of Mattoo. There are reports that the said teacher has been "censured and warned". All in all, the stand of the Governor and the Chief Minister has been appreciated by everyone in the University. An impression has gained ground that "Mattoo would be brought to justice". |
