10/22/2011 11:59:25 PM
Early Times Report
RAJOURI, Oct 22: Though the much talked about Mughal road was constructed for boosting the economy and trade of the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch and shorten their distance with Kashmir Valley but the road has become a conduit for smuggling of bovine animals and narcotics.
According to sources the hundreds of bovines are daily smuggled from Jammu to Kashmir Valley via Mughal road since it was unofficially opened for vehicular traffic for over a year. While the bovines and milch cows are smuggled from Jammu to Valley the narcotics and charas is smuggled from Valley to Jammu and other parts of country through this road, sources added.
Sources said this all happens under the nose of administration and police which has failed to take the cognizance of the same till date. The people of the two districts especially the leaders of various social and political organizations have taken up the issue with the authorities but to no avail. There is also a brewing resentment among the masses over the role of administration and police which according to them is a mute spectator to this illegal trade, sources added.
Sources said with the route become a hub of smuggling the people of the twin districts are worried over its ill effects on the society. No doubt the opening of road will boost the trade and economy of the border districts but at the same time it will perish the society and increase the crime is the main cause of concern of the people, sources added.
The security agencies are also worried that in case no check is maintained over the smuggling of bovines and Charas etc. from this route then what can be guarantee that this route will not be used for safe passage of arms and ammunition by the terrorists.
Sources said the police naka at Chandimar in Rajouri district is useless as till all the bovine smugglers and other illegal traders from Kashmir were given a safe passage from this route. Moreover the Nakas have been installed by state police and security forces at different places on Jammu - Srinagar National highway but no such Nakas are visible on Mughal road though this route is very much near to Loc and there have been reports that the terrorist from across the border have been using this track for infiltration to Kashmir and create the disturbances there.
The people are demanding proper patrolling and police vigil on the road besides creating of more nakas at different places from both sides in Jammu as well as Kashmir region to check the illegal trade on the road.
In case the authorities fail to act and check the growing menace of smuggling through this road the security concerns which existed earlier and apprehensions raised by previous governments over the opening of the road will prove true, sources said.
