| 'UHQ discussed AFSPA revocation before Omar's announcement' | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 22: A few days before Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) will be revoked from certain areas of Jammu and Kashmir, a secret meeting of Unified Headquarters had been called to identify the areas where from the AFSPA can be revoked, sources.
"In the UHQ meeting attended by GOC 15-Corps, Lt Gen Ata Hasnain, Home Secretary BR Sharma, DGP Kuldeep Khoda and other officers of Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and intelligence agencies, the issue was discussed threadbare," they said.
Sources told local news agency KNS that the AFSPA won't be revoked from north Kashmir. "However, it may be revoked from Budgam town, Srinagar and Ganderbal town. In Jammu region the AFSPA will be revoked from Samba and Jammu town in first phase. After revocation of AFSPA from these areas, the police will be given more powers to deal with the law and order situation in these areas," they said.
A senior cabinet minister said on the condition of anonymity that the decision may be taken at the cabinet meeting scheduled on October 28.
Meanwhile, sources said that Defence Ministry has raised objection over revocation of the AFSPA. "Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma who is scheduled to arrive here on Sunday will brief the Chief Minister about his apprehensions as his Ministry is opposed to revocation of AFSPA even from selected areas," sources said. |
