Chaman deplores ministers’ view over AFSPA | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 23:The former Union Minister, Chaman Lal Gupta has deplored the airing of divergent views over the issue of Armed Forces Special Power Act by the two senior ministers of the UPA Govt viz the Home and the Defence, especially when the separatists and semi-separatists are engaged in playing their politics on this sensitive issue linked with the security matters in this part of the country. Gupta said that it sounds strange for advocacy of lowering of the guards in the name of Human Rights, the bogey of which is the creation of the elements hostile to the unity and integrity of the country and who have been playing their game in one form or the other. But it sounds strange that the two senior ministers of the UPA Govt are locking horns in the public over the matter which of course pertains to the ministries of two Departments, he added and observed that this itself exposes the functioning of the Govt at the Centre. Gupta said that the ground realities in J&K have not changed much as far as enemy designs are concerned. Lakhs of people have been forced out from their places because of the religious bigotry of a section of the people. Their properties are still being encroached upon and misused. Without proper settlement of the uprooted people, it would be ridiculous to claim about the restoration of normalcy. However, whatever steps are to be taken on security matters, these should not be made an issue of public debate especially when the basic problems still remain to be tackled and the infiltration bids are still going on. He also ridiculed the statements of the CM Omar Abdullah in this regard and pointed out that the State Govt itself had specified the disturbed areas but instead of rectifying their own doings and setting their house in order, the ball is being thrown in the court of the Centre. Gupta observed that the controversy over the AFSPA is leading to wrong signal across the border, moreso, this was rather the game of those who have launched a proxy war against India in Jammu and Kashmir, and spreading canards against the forces engaged in fighting the terror.
