Central team meets state officials, discusses AFSPA removal | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SUNDAY, 23 OCTOBER 2011 20:16 SRINAGAR: KNS The high level central team of secretaries, led by the Cabinet Secretary Ajit Kumar Seth which arrived here on Sunday held several security review meetings with top security officers in Jammu and Kashmir, sources said. They said immediately after arriving here, Seth alongwith Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma and Home Secretary R K Singh held a meeting at SKICC here which was attended by State Home Secretary B R Sharma, DGP Kuldeep Khoda, GOC 15-Corps Lt Gen Atta Hasnain, Additional Director IB and several other officers. “Apart from overall situation in the state, issue of revocation of controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from certain areas was discussed in the meeting. The Defence Secretary and Army officers shared their apprehensions regarding revocation of AFSPA,” sources said. However, they said, majority of the officials in the meeting were in favour of revoking the AFSPA. “The state officers were of the view that revocation of AFSPA from certain areas can instill confidence among the people and they favored that the Act should be revoked from those areas where impact of militancy was les,” sources added. The Union Secretaries later held several meetings with officials of security agencies in which overall security scenario in the state was discussed, sources said.
