Centre begins search for new Kashmir police chief | | | srinagar: Worried about the heads of Institutions getting involved in legal tangles, New Delhi has quietly started a look out for a new Director General of Police for Jammu and Kashmir, a local newspaper reported. Sources in New Delhi told the newspaper that the Union Home Ministry has started a short listing process for the new head of police for the state, almost six months before the current DGP Kuldeep Khuda completes his tenure. Sources also indicated that a UP or a Bihar Cadre IPS Officer is the front runner for the post. This time New Delhi seems to be keen to depute a muslim officer as a top cop for the state. "It would make a lot of administrative and political sense to send a muslim officer to lead what is primarily a muslim police force in country's only Muslim majority state", a source in New Delhi told the newspaper. The source added that the senior IPS officer has already been sounded of for the J&K posting and has given a very positive vibe that he is interested in J&K job. Many security experts believe that it was high time for the state government to start preparing someone for taking over the reins from Kuldeep Khuda when he finishes his tenure in May. "If at all the government wants to bring in someone, the officer must be sounded well in advance. Then perhaps they should get him into the state to understand how the state police functions and what were its plus and minus points. Getting someone in at the last moment will not be good for the police force," the newspaper quoted an unnamed expert. It is widely believed that the state government and New Delhi had begun to get slightly worried about the current DGP's name being taken to High Court over an alleged extra judicial killing in Udhampur, it said. The petitioners in the High Court have also named the DGP as one of the accused in the case. The next hearing of the case is now on the 28th of October. "The case has now become high profile. Not only does it figure the DGP but team Anna member Prashant Bhushan appeared on behalf of the petitioners," a source in the states Home Department said. Sources said in view of the active judiciary it was very important to have a 'Plan B' in case something unexpected happened. Prashant Bhushan has been in the news lately after he was beaten black and blue by members of right wing organization for his views on Kashmir. Bhushan had said that a referendum should be allowed in Kashmir to decide its future. So far there have been just two Muslim Director Generals of J&K. |
