Unborn baby among 8 killed, 28 hurt as falls into gorge near Nandini | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 23: As non-Kashmiri workers flee the valley following hardline Ali Shah Geelani's threat to launch an agitation against them, a bus carrying labourers today fell into a gorge near Nandini, about 22 km from here, resulting in the tragic death of eight of them, including an unborn baby and five children, and injuries to 28 others, mostly women and children. The ill-fated bus (JK03/2517) left Srinagar Saturday at about 11 pm. It skidded off the national highway and fell into a gorge close to Gen Atma Singh memorial near Nandini at about 7.45 am. When the tragedy struck, most of the labourers were sleeping. Geelani had early this month threatened to launch an agitation against Omar-government if it did not oust non-Kashmiri slum dwellers from the valley by October 20. Most of these slum dwellers are migrant labourers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chattisgarh. The threat was issued by him in the wake of the government decision to bring Slum Dwellers Property Bill, granting property rights to slum dwellers. According to him, the bill was a ploy to allow outsiders to settle in the state. Panicked by the Geelani's threat, Chhattisgarh labourers left the valley in four buses last night. While three buses reached here safely, one met with the tragedy near Nandini. The incident took place because of the negligence of the driver who was absconding, police sources said. Soon after the incident, locals and cops led by SHO of Jhajjar Kotli police station launched a rescue operation and evacuated all the injured to GMC hospital here in police and civil vehicles. Seven persons were declared brought dead by the doctors. Savitri Devi (30), wife of Ram Kumar, who was pregnant by 8 months, also lost her baby. Twenty five of the injured were identified as Anil Kumar (3), son of Lakhan Yadav, his mother Luxmi, Ramayan's son Ram (9), Raj Kumar (40), son of Puni Ram, his daughter Shilpa (6), Savitri, Hira Lal (36), son of Dhana Ram, Chote Lal (35), son of Ranjit, Leela Ram, his wife Jai Bari, son Dhan Kumar (5) and daughters -- Bhuri (10), Anita and Sunita -- Piyari Bhai, wife of Muni Ram, Puni Ram (45), son of Bishambar, Sukwara (18), daughter of Vishram, Dhanpati Bhai, wife of Chandra, their daughters -- Nirmala (2) and Urmila -- Tinku, son of Gondi Ram, his wife Rekha, Bajrangbali, son of Vaishno, his sister Santioshi (18) and Chand Ram, son of Kanshi Ram. The blood of the victims was splattered and their belongings scattered at the accident site which presented a gory look. Police were searching for the escaped driver, the sources added. |
