EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Oct 24 : Army commander Northern Command Lt General K T Parnaik today visited the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kupwara sector, which is being used by trained militants to infiltrate into this side from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The Army commander later briefed Governor N N Vohra, official sources said.
They said Lt General Parnaik, accompanied by GOC, Chinar Corps Lt General S A Hasnain visited the forward areas on the LoC in the frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir.
The visit of Lt Gen Parnaik to forward areas comes at a time when efforts were being made from across the border to send as many trained militants into this side before the infiltration routes are closed due to heavy snowfall.
The routes received light to moderate snowfall during the past two days.

More than 1000 militants, trained in different camps across the LoC, are waiting in launching pads to sneak into this side to revive the militancy in the Kashmir valley, where several militant commanders were gunned down by the security forces during the past six months.

Sources said the Army commander was briefed in detail by the field commanders deployed on the LoC about the measures taken to foil any infiltration attempt.

He was informed that night and foot patrolling all along the border had been further intensified to foil any attempt by militants to sneak into this side.

Lt Gen Parnaik was briefed on the operational preparedness and the situation on the LoC by Lt Gen Hasnain.

He also interacted with troops deploy on the LoC in High Altitude Areas.

The Army Commander later called on the Mr Vohra and apprised him of security scenario.

Sources said that the meeting assumed significance as the state government has decided to revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Disturbed Area Act (DAA) from some areas in the state, a move opposed by the Army and other Central forces.
