Leh highway through, weather improves in Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Oct 24 : Traffic on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh National Highway was resumed after remaining suspended for 24-hour due to snowfall at Zojila and other areas. The weather in the Kashmir valley has improved after fresh snowfall on upper reaches and rains in plains during the past two days resulting in considerable drop in the temperature. A traffic police official told UNI today that light vehicles, carrying passengers, were allowed from Sonmarg to Drass on the highway, the only road linking the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, yesterday shortly before evening. The highway was put through after the Border Roads Organisation responsible for the maintainance of the highway put into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the snow at Zojila and Meenamarg.
Later heavy vehicles, including empty trucks, were allowed from Drass to Srinagar.
The highway is through from both sides today as the weather has improved.
The highway, which is closed officially from November 1 every year for six winter months to avoid any tragedy, will remain open till the weather permits, officials said.
The government has already stored essentials, including rice, atta, kerosene oil, diesel, petrol, LPG cylinders, medicine and other items at different places in the Ladakh region for winter.
The weather has improved in the Kashmir valley, where the upper reaches experienced fresh snowfall and plains had rains during the past two days, resulting in cold forcing people to wear woolen clothes and use Kashmiri Kangri.
