| Mangat for due recognition to physically handicapped | | | Jammu, Jan 4 Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma stressed on the need for giving due recognition to the physically challenged persons in the society so that they may not feel a sense of discrimination. The minister was addressing a function organized by the Residential School for Blind to celebrate 199th Birth Anniversary of Louis Braille who invented six digits of Braille scripts for the blinds. Secretary Social Welfare Mr. M.K. Verma, Director Social Welfare Mr. Satish Nehru and Deputy Director Information Ms. Suraiya Aga were also present. Mr. Sharma said that Government will take necessary steps to provide better facilities to the inmates of the blind school. He asked the Director Social Welfare to come up with a comprehensive proposal for increasing the in take capacity of the students, upgradation of primary school to middle level besides increasing job reservation quota and pension benefits for physically challenged persons for appropriate action by the Government. Appreciating the performance of the students of the blind school, Mr. Sharma said that despite their blindness they showed their hidden talent in the field of education, music, dance, skits and songs which enthralled audiences. He said he was pleased to know that some of these students are studying in colleges, universities and have got employment in different departments. Mr. Sharma also inaugurated Computer Lab with Braille software at the blinds school. He also distributed prizes among the students who performed excellence at the function and announced Rs. 5000 for them. Students were also awarded Rs. 10,000 on behalf of Minister for social Welfare, Haji Nissar Ali and Rs. 500 by Ms. Shanti Devi. Giving detail of the Residential School for blind Mr. Nehru apprised that school is functioning under the Social Welfare Department at an annual allocation of Rs. 13 lakh. He said of the total 25 students, 13 are studying in primary classes and rest are studying in different colleges and universities. The students are being provided free boarding, lodging, books, uniforms etc. by the Department. The students from Residential School for blind and Louis Braille School performed a cultural programme which was highly appreciated by the audience. A number of representatives from Non Governmental Organizations and prominent citizens attended the function. |
