PDP condemns neglect of ancient Sarais on Mughal Road
10/27/2011 10:36:46 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
RAJOURI, Oct 27:Senior PDP leader Shahzad Khan has criticised the government and the Archaeological Survey of India for their brute negligence towards the number of Mughal Sarais lined up on the great Mughal Road.
Earlier, Shahzad Khan had conducted a tour of these structures in the area. He has expressed his regret over the dilapidated condition of the Mughal heritage. Giving a detail of the conditions and present status of the structures, Shahzad Khan in a press release said that most of these Sarais are under the army and police occupation and ruthlessly being used as headquarters and residential quarters. While the Mughal Sarais at Anayatpur, Muradpur, Fatehpur and Saaj and the Rajouri Mughal garden located in the heart of the town near Jhulla Bridge are encroached upon by the local residents in connivance with the revenue authorities.
The Aliabad Sarai is often being used as a temporary shelter by the troops stationed in the area besides by travellers, Gujjars and Bakarwals visiting the area for pasture. It is the only structure preserved to some extent. The areas within the complex of these structures are used for agricultural as well as dwelling purposes. Most of the remaining sarais including Ratanpir Sarai have been reduced to rubbles and only the carcass is left. It’s a pity that all these structures are in the process of decay but for the negligence by the authorities.
Shahzad further said these structures are the evidence of the glorious Mughal rule and its extent to this part of the country.
He said, “These are the living heritages that owe their existence and preservation to us. When on the one hand we talk of sustainable development, is it not our duty to preserve our heritage? If we go on neglecting our ancestral buildings, what are we left with to give our future generations in legacy?”
