2 hours after brother gave her sweets on Diwali, woman dies of alleged torture by in-laws | Husband, brother-in-law held | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 27: Nearly two hours after her younger brother visited her at her in-laws' house at Jatwal in Samba and gave sweets on Diwali yesterday, a newly-married woman died of alleged torture by her husband and others in the family. She was found hanging under mysterious circumstances from the ceiling fan hook in her room. She had bled from nose and mouth, police sources said. Pooja Sharma (21) of Mangoo Chak, Samba, was married to Sandeep Sharma of Jatwal about six months back. Soon after marriage, she complained of alleged torture by in-laws for more dowry, the sources added. Sandeep runs a TV shop in the village and does not earn much. Along with gold and other items, he had got a motorcycle in dowry. He, however, wanted a costlier mobike and had allegedly been pressing Pooja to ask her parents to buy it for him. As it was Diwali yesterday, her younger brother Madan alias Jailoo visited her at her in-laws' house at Jatwal in the afternoon along with sweets and several other items. Jailoo told Early Times that she wept bitterly when he met her. "She told me that she was being constantly tortured by Sandeep and others in the family," he added. He said he put off the matter till Friday when she was to visit them at Mangoo Chak on the eve of Bhaiya Dhooj. "Two hours, or so after I left her in-laws' house, we received a message that she had died of hanging," he said. Her parents and three brothers, all of whom are serving army personnel, immediately reached Jatwal. Police too reached there after the matter came to their notice. As blood had come out of Pooja's nose and mouth, Jailoo and his another sister Kanta alleged that she had been murdered. Police later shifted the body to Samba district hospital where post-mortem was conducted on it. Acting on the complaint of her family, police arrested Sandeep and his elder brother Yogesh Sharma and booked them under section 306 of RPC. Pooja's mother-in-law and sister--in-law were, however, absconding. Sources said as police were conducting raids at their possible hideouts, they were likely to be apprehended soon. Last rites were performed on her body by her parents.
