Mustafa Kamaal's howler shakes Farooq & Omar

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 27: Was it a howler from National Conference spokesman,Mustafa Kamaal?Or did it reflect Political bankruptcy in the ruling NC or lack of organisational coordination that forced the elder brother to deny what his younger brother had stated and is son to disown his uncle's opinion ?
This peculiar situation was witnessed in the state's summer capital the other day. What was this peculiar and intriguing scene? It was a sort of a howler on the part of Mustafa Kamaal.Kamaal who had reacted to recent bomb explosions in which nine people, including four policemen, were injured by saying that these had been engineered by the Army to create a situation which would not favour withdrawal of AFSPA.
At one stage senior Army functionaries in Srinagar were so much peeved over the statement that they did not find it fit to comment on indicating that what Mustafa Kamaal had alleged was no less than preposterous. But within hours NC President,Dr Farooq Abdullah, and Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, received ample hints on resentment in the Ministry of Defence and among the senior functionaries of the Army.On one hand both father and son cautioned Mustafa against airing such howlers and on the other they tried to disown the statement.
Omar Abdullah said that Mustafa's statement has nothing to do with the state Government's opinion and its relattions with the Army. This way Omar totally disowned Mustafa's statement saying that it was not in tune with the policy and the opinion of the state Government.Even while disowning Mustafa's statement Omar reiterated his resolve to withdraw AFSPA from some areas in the state. It seems that Omar is more truthful than his father because in his statement he never said that Mustafa had not given the statement or he(Mustafa) had been misquoted or quoted out of context.
Against this Farooq Abdullah fully came to his brother's rescue by claiming that the party spokesman had not held the Army responsible for the bomb explosion. He and Mustafa stated that since the police investigation had not been completed how could they hold anyone responsible for the bomb explosions.
Another big howler. If the police investigations are over and either an individual or an institution is held responsible there is no need either for Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal,or Farooq Abdullah or Omar Abdullah to level charges against any agency. When militant outfits claim responsibility should we dismiss it as a canard because the police investigation has not been completed.Hence Mustafa's words or wisdom and Farooq's sermons on them are neither palatable nor tenable.
In the past also fingers were raised against the Army and the paramilitary forces whenever some incidents of subversive violence took place in the state. The security forces have come in for unsubstantiated criticism whenever reports surface on death of militants in exchange of fire.Voices claiming death of militants in police custody keep on multiplying. But the way Army were obliquely blamed for recent bomb explosions would have not set the Jehlum on fire had such accusations come from the separatists.Yes,the state witnessed commotion because the ruling party's spokesman held the Army responsible for the explosions.
Official sources sid that the Army would be too glad if the soldiers are withdrawn from within the civilian areas. They would be happier if the AFSPA is withdrawn provided its withdrawal did not derail whatever peace has been restored to the state.Hope Mustafa stops firing howlers.(eom)
