Congress undermining our effort; we will not consult it, asserts Kamal
Height of arrogance

JAMMU, Oct 28: Newly-appointed additional general secretary and chief spokesperson of the NC Sheikh Mustafa Kamal is hardening his stand on the Army and the Congress by the day and demonstrating his arrogance.
He is trying to create an impression in the state and elsewhere in the country that the only role of the Congress in the state is to lick the NC shoes and obey its instructions and directions as an obedient servant. He is, in addition, becoming more and more critical of the armed forces involved in anti-insurgency operations and combating terrorism. He has, to be more exact, revolted against the Congress and the Army.
On October 25, he lambasted the armed forces and directly accused them of engineering grenade attacks on the security establishments. His argument was that since the armed forces didn't want the AFSPA to be revoked, they engineered these attacks. It was a silly argument. The Army termed his remarks preposterous and silly.
He ate his words in the evening under pressure which was exerted by none other than his own elder brother Farooq Abdullah, who also happens to be the NC president and Union Minister for reasons not difficult to fathom. Reports suggested that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was also not happy over the provocative remarks of Kamal.
The retraction was nothing but a manifestation of political expediency that guided the three Abdullahs. All of them acted in unison for a while to control the damage caused by the uncouth, arrogant and rabidly anti-Congress Kamal. Kamal was not in favour of taking a U-turn, but he had to eat a humble pie much to his chagrin. But it has now become a story of the past. The Abdullahs are again in their true colours.
That Kamal was committed to what he had said in the afternoon on October 25 and not committed to what he said in the evening under pressure became clear yesterday when he willfully renewed his attack on the armed forces and reiterated what he had said in the afternoon. In an interview to a Delhi-based news channel, Kamal said that "if army was hurt by his statement, wherein he suspected the army role behind the Tuesday's attacks in various parts of the valley to strengthen its stand on controversial Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), so was he".
He also said: "I am hurt with their (Army's) behaviour too. I am hurt with the incidents they have committed here. I have stories to tell, right from 1990, which keeps hurting my heart. Is it the only army which has a heart and we don't have a heart? If they feel hurt, I feel hurt too…Has it never hurt us? It could be the circumstances that were there when situation came. People's feelings were hurt. This is an issue which has hurt everybody. It's not forgettable. Children were not spared, women were not spared".
When asked by reporters what he had to say about what Kamal said, Army chief General BK Singh said: "Whosoever has given that comment, I think that does not deserve the courtesy of any remark from me". In other words, he dismissed Kamal with the contempt he deserved. It was a befitting response of a responsible person to irresponsible person's motivated fulminations against what could be described as disciplined armed forces.
The yesterday's attack of Kamal on the Army was much more severe. In fact, he crossed all the lines. And, he re-launched a scathing attack on the Army at a time when the equally unaccommodating and arrogant Omar Abdullah was publicly taking on the JKPCC president, Saif-ud-Soz, for his positive suggestion that it would have been better had he also discussed the whole issue with him and the Defence Minister before making an announcement that he would withdraw the AFSPA from certain areas before Durbar starts functioning in Jammu.
Both took an identical stand on the Congress party and its president Soz. If Omar Abdullah ridicule and let down senior Congress leader and former Union Minister, Soz, by saying that there was no need for him to take the JKPCC president on board as he had taken the Union Home Minister into confidence, Kamal went a step further and lambasted him using questionable language.
There was no sophistication. Lashing out at Soz for his statement on the AFSPA, Kamal said: "The state Congress was consulted on the issue many times. (Which Congress did Kamal talk about? Certainly, not the one led by Soz.) Anyway we (NC) don't need to consult them. We have already conveyed our message to Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi.
We have discussed it with Home Minister also. So there is no need to consult them now. We have been continuously voicing for revocation of AFSPA from last many months. It is merely a tactic on their part to undermine our effort in revoking AFSPA. They want to make an issue out of it". What does all this show? It shows only the Abdullahs' arrogance. Is this the way to run a coalition government? Is this the way to take decisions on sensitive issues? Is this the way to deal with a coalition partner?
This is not the way. The Abdullahs have crossed the Lakshman Rekha and publicly displayed arrogance of an extreme form. It would not be surprising if the Congress finally takes what these two Abdullahs did in the last few days to mean a deliberate affront to its self-respect and act to show them their rightful place. In fact, there are already reports that the Congress would ask Omar Abdullah to put in his papers well before January 4, 2012, when his three-year highly controversial rule comes to an end.
