Mustafa Kamal elevated to strike hefty bargain, resurrect pro-Kashmir image | Rotational CM issue worrying NC! | | Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Oct 28: With state congress upping ante for rotational Chief Ministership, Leadership of National Conference (NC) has seemingly read writing on the wall and begun resurrecting its Pro-Kashmir image. Though UPA chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi alongwith General Secretary Rahul Gandhi are yet to speak a word on the issue, National Conference (NC) has started drastic image makeover in Kashmir valley. To begin with, Dr. Farooq Abdullah in consultation with his son and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah elevated controversial Dr. Mustafa Kamal as Additional General Secretary of the party. Kamal is known across the political circles as ace congress basher. Not long ago, Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora and Mustafa Kamal were involved in a bitter exchange of words during the first Budget session of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah led coalition government. Kamal did not stop here and commented fearlessly whenever he was asked about the role of congress, both present and past. If leaders of National Conference are to be believed, Kamal was sidelined merely because of his anti-Congress statements. Both his brother Dr. Farooq Abdullah and nephew Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would rebut his (Kamal) statements of and on to save grace but after his elevation as Additional General Secretary, especially three months prior to the coalition completing three years, both have seemingly given him liberty to issue statements which would appease the annoyed Kashmiri vote bank of NC. If not Omar Abdullah who still has unflinching faith of not being replaced by a Congress Chief Minister, his father and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah has felt mild tremors. Besides, Farooq knows Congress better than Omar. He realizes that if faced with rebellion at the state level, high command of congress, which essentially means Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, would convince Omar Abdullah to demit office overnight by or before January 5, 2011. Farooq is also aware of the congress way of changing governments and coalition partners overnight. From Sachin Pilot to former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress would utilize services of all to ensure that their flock remains intact, coalition with NC completes six years and above all, the demand local congressmen is met. With all this and much more in mind, political analysts describe Kamal's elevation by Dr. Farooq Abdullah opportune and timely. They approve Kamal's recent statements and assert that the entire gimmick is aimed at revitalizing the party cadre across Kashmir valley. Analysts maintain that these statements especially the ones against Army and other's against the state congress, are actually appeasement tactics, aimed at restoring battered image of National Conference (NC) in Kashmir valley. Barring certain 'disowned statements of Ali Mohammed Sagar and Mustafa Kamal', none heard NC speaking a word against Army for the last 34 months. "They have turned against Army overnight and are even ridiculing state Congress leadership in open. They have gone to the extent of negating the very importance of state unit of Congress and asserting that they prefer talking to New Delhi Congress," added an analyst. Kamal's elevation is aimed at striking hefty bargain with Congress leadership in case they decide of running the coalition for next three years. "NC cannot withdraw from the coalition. They have to remain in power because after what has happened in the last 34 months across the state, they cannot allow PDP to ally with Congress. That would be catastrophic for NC," asserted another analyst. Mustafa Kamal would help NC in striking a hefty bargain with Congress, added an analyst. He stated that Farooq realizes this and has on this count, given Kamal a free hand to issue statements of his choice, both against Congress and other institutions which symbolize presence of New Delhi in Srinagar. |
