J&K cabinet discusses modalities for revocation of AFSPA | PSA ordinance approved | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 28: State cabinet which met here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here on Friday discussed modalities for revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from "certain areas" of the state. They said the one hour meeting which stated at Civil Secretariat here at 11:30 am discussed the pros and cons of revocation of the 'draconian law.' "It was decided in the meeting that after receiving memo from Army and other security agencies on the issue, the same would be forwarded to the Union Home Ministry," they added. A senior cabinet minister said that in the next cabinet meeting which is scheduled to be held in Jammu next month; final decision regarding revocation of AFSPA will be taken. He said that in today's meeting, all the minister of National Conference and Congress participated. "However, deputy chief minister Tara Chand couldn't attend the meet due to health reasons," he added. Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohi-ud-Din said, "Only discussion was held on AFSPA today. It will come in agenda in next cabinet meet and CM will ask memo from all the security agencies," he said. Cabinet also okayed promulgation of ordinance titled 'Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act (Amendment) Ordinance 2011.' "The amendments contain that no minor can be detained under PSA now and maximum imprisonment under the Act would be reduced from two years to six months. Interrogator should know language of the detainee and PSA review committee advisory board should be replaced after every five-year," sources added. Meanwhile, sources said core group of the state's Unified Headquarter which met at Badami Bagh Cant here today also discussed the issue of revocation of AFSPA. Group which consists of Director General Police Kuldeep Khoda, GOC 15-Corps Lt Gen Syed Atta Hasnain, Lt Gen JP Nehra, GOC-16 Corps, Additional Director IB and Additional DG CRPF held a four-hour marathon meeting here on Friday, sources said. "Security review in the wake of annual Durbar Move was also held in the meeting," they added. |
