PNB to provide hassle free loans to artisans of Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, October 29, 2011: Punjab National Bank, a premier nationalized bank of the country organized an Artisan credit card distribution function in Srinagar today. K R Kamath chairman and managing director of the bank distributed 63 cards to artisans engaged in carpet weaving, shawl making and sozini work. The function was organized in collaboration with Ministry of Textile Government Of India. Addressing the gathering Kamath informed that the bank has No. 1 position amongst public sector banks with a network of more than 5400 branches spread across the length and breadth of the country and an equal number of alternate delivery channels in the shape of ATMs providing round the clock hassle free service to the customers. He also added that presently the bank had business of approx 6 lac crores and the bank had earned a net profit of 4434 crores during the financial year end March 2011. Kamath added that bank shall adopt artisans of the valley in a cluster approach and in this context a beginning had been made by covering artisans engaged in the activity of Carpet Weaving, Shawl Making and Sozni Work. He requested Director Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles GOI to provide more viable clusters to bank for financing artisans directly or through Self Help Groups. He informed that the bank has already taken up two clusters of artisans for intensive financing out of which one was located in Ganderbal area and other in Zadibal area of Kashmir valley. More than 400 Artisans have already been covered in this cluster till now he added. Ashok Gupta, Deputy General Manager and Circle Head Jammu and Kashmir informed the gathering that through its 87 branches in Jammu and Kashmir, PNB is always ready to contribute for the development and prosperity of the people of the state. He added that 28 branches of the bank in valley provided hassle free service to the customers even in the most trying circumstances. He requested artisans to come forward and avail collateral free loans under CGTMSE coverage from the bank in an absolute hassle free manner. M A Hamdani Director Handicrafts Ministry of Textiles thanked PNB and Kamath in particular for this bold initiative of cluster financing of Artisans in valley. He informed that this step is bound to improve the living conditions of poor artisans and provide them the freedom of choice apart from empowering them to seek adequate wages for their workmanship. He undertook to provide more clusters to PNB for intensive lending under activities like willow work papermache, walnut wood work and crewel embroidery. Other officials who were present included Mir Mushtaq Ahmad Area Manager Kashmir Valley branches, A K Mota Chief Manager Circle Office J& K and Showkat Ahmad Senior Manager Dal Gate . M L Sharma senior presented vote of thanks and assured the artisans of all possible help.
