Soz asks NC to abandon J&K-a-political problem-plank | Changing Political Scenario | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 29: JKPCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz is turning out to be a great asset for India. During the last four days, he has aired views which only a nationalist of nationalists and a true friend of the people of the state and country could air. In fact, he has explained things during the last four days in such a convincing manner that even his bitter critics, barring the NC leaders, particularly the three Abdullahs (Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mustafa Kamal), have been left with no other option but to appreciate him and his views. What has inspired the people to admire Prof Soz were not just his views on the Chief Minister and his style of functioning, on the AFSPA and on what he contemptuously dismissed as the "sectarian and sloganeering politics", but also his views on what the NC consistently terms as "political problem". (read Kashmir problem, which, according to the NC, is political that requires a political solution). The NC, it needs to be emphasized, has all through urged New Delhi to address the "Kashmir issue" politically. Its view is that a political package, and not employment and financial packages, alone could restore peace in the Valley. And, by political package, the NC means rather limited relationship between the state and New Delhi. Prof Soz also used to subscribe to this view before 1998. But this has now become a story of the past. He is an important Congress leader today and he is aware of his responsibilities. And, hence, a mature approach on his part to the issues facing the state and the country. That Prof Soz has become part of the national mainstream could be seen from what he told a leading Delhi-based news channel yesterday about what the NC describes as a political problem. He repudiated outright the NC's political problem-formulation and made a very significant statement to put things in perspective. His statement was like this: "When 85 per cent people participated in the Panchayat elections this year, what else is required on political front''? "Such a massive mandate in the Panchayat polls automatically amounted to a political solution to Kashmir problem''. It's true that Prof Soz also said that the "UPA Government is committed to a solution for which it had appointed three Interlocutors on Jammu and Kashmir, whose report has already been submitted to the Union Home Ministry". But it's also true that it was a general statement. Hence, it was not that significant. What was significant was what he said from his heart and what he said from his heart was: "Such a massive mandate in the Panchayat polls (participation of 85 per cent electorate) automatically amounted to a political solution to Kashmir problem''. Will the NC appreciate Prof Soz's formulations? It must if it wishes to remain relevant in the state's political arena. Prof Soz's is a sane counsel and the NC would commit yet another blunder if it refuses to appreciate it and continues to cling to the outmoded, exclusivist and regressive ideology. |
