| Muslim Personal Law Board in news | | Sonia being accused of dividing Muslim community | |
BL KAK NEW DELHI, JAN 5 Political foes of Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, just need an opportunity to make use of against her, even as she wants to continue with her approach of caution and care while handling sensitive matters. A serious charge has been levelled against her by her critics, saying that she is trying to divide the Muslim community for electoral gains. The allegation against Sonia Gandhi has surfaced following her meeting with some key office-bearers of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) ahead of upcoming crucial Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh. Although details of the meeting, which was supposed to be secret, are not yet known, it is believed that Sonia discussed the issue of the AIMPLB extending its support to her party during the Uttar Pradesh elections, due to be held before mid-May. The meeting assumed significance since the AIMPLB is to elect its new president next week. A section of the Board, which is not happy with the secret meeting, is now blaming Sonia of trying to divide the Muslims. "This is nothing new. She is just following the policies of her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi. Congress party has always tried to divide our community whenever it is in power", a disgruntled member of the Board said. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, the supreme decision making body of Indian Muslims, is currently a divided lot. While its incumbent president Hazrat Maulana Syed Mohammad Rabe Hasani Nadwi, who is based in Lucknow, is said to be inclined towards supporting the Samajwadi Party of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, a powerful section of the Board is unhappy with Yadav. The AIMPLB had officially blamed ther Mulayam Yadav government of purposely weakening the cases against nine accused in December 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case, including that against the former Deputy Prime minister LK Advani. The AIMPLB had also said that Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party may have to pay its price during the Assembly elections in UP. "Annoyance with Yadav does not necessarily mean we have to support the Congress party", the Board member said.
