Is Mustafa Kamaal aiming at sabotaging Cong-NC tie-up? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 29: By blaming the Army for engineering bomb explosions in Srinagar does the party spokesman, Mustafa Kamaal, brother of Dr Farooq Abdullah and uncle of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, aim at sabotaging the National Conference-Congress coalition ?Those who hold this view argue that since the formation of the coalition Government headed by Omar Abdullah, Mustafa has been nursing a grudge against his elder brother, Farooq Abdullah, who had not pleaded his (Mustafa's) case for the Chief Minister's post. It is believed that Mustafa's another reason for his displeasure with the NC leadership was when he was not inducted in the cabinet despite being a senior party leader and having shown his talent as a minister in the cabinet headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah. If he has been appointed additional general secretary and spokesman for the National Conference it is the result of ailing Sheikh Nazir, general secretary of the ruling party. In fact even in the wake of ailing Nazir there was no compulsion on the part of NC president to appoint Mustafa as spokesman. It was simply an exercise on rehabilitating Mustafa. But Mustafa, it is believed, had no reason to feel satisfied. It is because of this resentment that Mustafa has been voicing opinion on highly sensitive issues including clemency for Afzal Guru, and on the lifting of AFSPA. Mustafa, while referring to Tuesday's bomb explosions in Srinagar ,in which four security personnel were injured, blamed the Army for these blasts so that the plan on AFSPA lifting was defer red. He later modified his stand by saying that he had not said anything against the Army. This he did under pressure from NC President, Farooq Abdullah, who too dissociated himself from the views expressed by his brother. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, preferred to ignore Mustafa's allegations against the Army and instead praised the role of the troops in Jammu and Kashmir. Those who say that Mustafa wants to see the Congress snapping ties with the National Conference argue that had it not been the case Mustafa would not have voiced bitter feelings against the Army a day after he was asked to deny his statement on Army's alleged involvement in bomb explosions. Mustafa told a TV news channel that he feels hurt by what the Army has been doing since 1990 and he stated that he has evidence to support his allegations. If Omar and Farooq initiated measures to douse the flames of anger and mistrust between the Army and the state Government Mustafa has tried to rekindle these flames possibly to see the Congress-NC tie-up going up in flames. |
