No need to pay compensation to NHPC for power projects: Group | | | REARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Oct 30 civil society group today said Jammu and Kashmir government does not need to pay any compensation to the NHPC for return of Salal and Uri power projects as the corporation does not have any legal basis to claim ownership of these projects. "There is a lot of talk about the state government paying NHPC crores of rupees as compensation for Salal and Uri power projects. Since the corporation does not have any agreement with the state, the question of paying the compensation does not arise," head of the civil society group Shakeel Qalender told reporters here. Qalender, who was a member of the jobs committee formed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and headed by C Rangarajan last year, said the projects were a property of the people of the state and the state government should take all steps to restore these assets to them. "The state government has set November 12 as deadline for NHPC to obtain water usage licence for its power projects in Jammu and Kashmir. We are waiting to see what course of action the government takes since NHPC cannot be given the licence in view of non-existance of any agreement or document that could prove ownership rights of the corporation," he said. "We will use all avenues available to ensure that there is no sell out at this time. We have the option of approaching the court as well," he said. He said in response to an RTI application, the NHPC has failed to come up with any document to prove that it has any legal basis of holding on to these power projects in the state.
