UP Guv for CBI probe into Noida killings
1/6/2007 12:57:07 AM
Lucknow, Jan 5
Uttar Pradesh Governor T.V. Rajeshwar has written a letter to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, urging him for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the mass murder of children in a village near Noida.
Rajeshwar has reportedly advised the chief minister to entrust the probe to the CBI so that its larger ramifications could be unearthed. The governor feels the CBI is better equipped to handle a case of such complexities and magnitude.
He has pointed out that the killings had already brought much disrepute to the state government.
According to informed sources, the letter was sent about four days ago but both the Raj Bhawan and the Chief Minister's office were tight-lipped about it.
It was Mulayam Singh Yadav's confidante and Samajwadi Party MP Beni Prasad Verma who spilled the beans. Expressing his displeasure, he told reporters here Friday: "The governor was over-stretching his brief. He has no business to be issuing such advice to the chief minister."
Verma also accused the governor of "playing a Congress agent and virtually turning Raj Bhawan into a Congress party office".
According to Verma, there was no need to transfer the case to the CBI as the state police were well equipped to handle it.
"The chief minister was not averse to the idea but where was the need to do so when our state police have a proven track record of working out cases in record time and faster than the CBI."
The police last week unearthed remains of at least 20 children from a drain behind the bungalow of businessman Moninder Singh Pandher in Noida, a suburban town of New Delhi, sending shock waves all over the country.
Pandher and his domestic aide Surendra Kohli have been arrested.
On Wednesday, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury announced a four-member committee "to investigate into the sexual abuse and killings of the children".
