Collective decision should be taken on revocation of AFSPA: Farooq Abdullah | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Oct 31 : Asserting that there was "massive" public opinion in favour of revoking the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah on Monday said all opinions, including that of the Centre''s team of interlocutors, should be taken on revocation of the controversial act. "Massive public opinion disapproved such laws but conceded that all the stakeholders such as the Central and State Governments should take a collective decision on its lifting," he told the media here. "If there is peace (in Kashmir), then the AFSPA should be withdrawn to carry forward peace. He (Omar Abdullah) has expressed his opinion. Now the Government of India has to decide on this," he added. Asked about the demand for rotation of Chief Minister from some leaders in Congress, a coalition partner in the state government, Abdullah said he would not comment on the issue. "I will not say anything on this. I don''t know these things. I don''t create difference nor I think we are going to move forward due to differences," he added. Earlier, State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah declared that AFSPA would be withdrawn from certain areas of the province. Addressing a gathering here, Abdullah said that since the security condition has improved in the Kashmir region, the government was in a position to consider removal of AFSPA. "Today, I am happy to announce that the time has come and the circumstances are permitting us to lift those laws, from certain areas, which were imposed during the time of rampant militancy in the state," Omar Abdullah added.
