Is China doing a Kargil in Ladakh or AP? | | | Is China preparing for doing a Kargil on or around the Line of Actual Control(LAC) right from Arunachal Pradesh to Ladakh? If the report of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis is any guide possibility of a Chinese adventure or misadventure on the border belt either in Arunachal Pradesh,or central sector,or Ladakh or Sikkim cannot be ruled out.Other reports do indicate that Beijing is worried over India's plan on raising additional battalons of troops ready to fight a mountain warfare and on upgrading and updating its weaponary, including fighter aircrafts, tanks and missiles.Hence China does not want to give enough time to New Delhi for carrying out its plan on building an Army that could meet any challenge from the Chinese forces. In fact China has never been in favour of India becoming a super power.Beijing is not prepared to allow India to play a dominant role in international politics as a major voice from South Asian region. This very policy had motivated China to carry out limited attack on the Indian border posts in 1962.At that stage India was far behind the Chinese military might and hence India had to face embarrassment when large chunks of border areas in the north east were captured by the Chinese troops. India's image as a south Asian giant was tarnished. And since then the Sino-India ties are based on mistrust and conflict. The Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai era had been buried under the 1962 conflict. And during the last 49 years the Indo- China relations are governed by border conflict with Beijing trying to demontrate its extra territorial ambition. In a way China does not want to give any respite to India so that it could initiate measures on revolutionising the sectors of industry, agriculture, electricity, science and technology, health care and education. In fact if annual allocations on the defence are higher than health and industry it is the result of the country having been sandwiched between the two potential enemies, china and Pakistan. And what seems to have added to the worries of New Delhi is the way its two enemies have joined hands. If at all China plans to do a Kargil either in Arunahal Pradesh or in Ladakh or in Sikkim it may be doing so simply to teach India a lesson as it had done in 1962.The Institute report. says that the adventure of playing Kargil could be confined to a specific section of the border. And this exercise may be limited in duration and amenable to negotiated termination. The exercise may be in the shape of a territorial grab either in Ladakh or in Arunachal Pradesh.Other reports said that China has been eying some border pockets in Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh.Over the years Beijing has been claiming that Arunachal Pradesh is part of China and therefore the possibilities of China doing a Kargil in Arunachal Pradesh are higher than the operation in Sikkim or in the central sector.Even this exercise may be of a limited period and for a limited purpose it makes it mandatory for India to upgrade its war machinery on a war footing lest it should face the embarrassment it had faced in 1962.And even if the two sides succeed in resolving the border dispute New Delhi should never trust Beijing |
