For power Kamal turns soft towards Congress | Politics Of Opportunisim | | Neha JAMMU, Nov 1: Convinced that his statements on the JKPCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz have made things very difficult for the isolated chief minister Omar Abdullah, his nephew, NC additional general secretary and chief spokesperson Sheikh Mustafa Kamal has sought to befriend the alienated Congress party. Expressing his concern over what he called group-ism within the Congress, he yesterday at Kulgam cautioned Congress workers to "show restraint while issuing statements against each other". Obviously, he was referring to the revolt in the Congress against PHE minister Taj Mhi-ud-Din, who on Friday and Saturday had made statements on the AFSPA and rotational chief minister which ran counter to the stand of the JKPCC president on these two sensitive and crucial issues. Taj had embarrassed Prof Soz. Taj had, it bears recalling, said that the chief minister had discussed with him the issue of the AFSPA and announced that Omar Abdullah would continue to be chief minister for the next three years as well. He had, in fact, sought to undermine the authority of Prof Soz and publicly identified himself with chief minister Omar Abdullah, thus indicating that he was all out for the NC and what it stood for. It was these statements that have provoked the Congressmen, including JKPCC office-bearers, workers, ministers and even persons like former JKPCC president Ghulam Rasool Kar who was once very close to Taj. They have demanded stringent action against Taj. Some of them have even asked Taj to quit the party saying his presence in the party is only embarrassing the leadership and harming the long-term interests of the Congress in the state. Feeling the heat, Taj has now written a letter to AICC president Sonia Gandhi explaining his position. His tone and tenor nowhere suggested moderation. The letter he wrote to Sonia Gandhi yesterday has questioned Prof Soz's intentions. The under-severe-attack Kamal not only urged the Congress workers to exercise restraint while making statements against each other, but also asked the Congress party to give "full support to chief minister Omar Abdullah so that he would continue to deliver better in the administration". "The Congress leaders must keep aside their internal political rivalries for the larger interests of the people and the coalition government," he said. The Kamal's counsels to the Congress at a time when the entire Congress leadership in the state, barring a few vested interests and disgruntled elements, is chaffing and seething with anger could be construed as a damage-control exercise. His counsels do not indicate a change of heart on his part or on the part of the party he represents. His counsels are, as a matter of fact, desperate attempts at wooing the alienated Congress leadership so that Omar Abdullah/NC could rule the state and ride roughshod. That for two days he would spit venom on the JKPCC president and hurl abuses at the Congress party and suddenly on Monday he would express his concern over what had been going on within the Congress party in the aftermath of the Taj's controversial statements should establish that his counsels to the Congress are politically motivated and that the NC is not a friend of the Congress. He simply wants to mollify the angry Congress leadership in order to ensure Omar Abdullah's smooth sailing. It is unlikely to happen as things have reached a point of no return. There is hardly any Congressman in the state - leave aside Taj and a few others - who would ever forgive Kamal or for that matter any other Abdullah. Kamal has been consistently denigrating the Congress party and the Congress leadership and holding them squarely responsible for the so-called "alienation in Kashmir". In fact, Kamal could be described as number one enemy of the Congress. The Congress also cannot afford to watch the NC activities as a mute spectator anymore because Omar Abdullah and Kamal have now crossed the Lakshman Rekha. The Congress is a national party and it has to look after and cater to wider interests. It can't afford to vouch for what the NC stands and works for. Omar Abdullah and Kamal have spoiled and vitiated the atmosphere and they will have to pay from their nose. They cannot abuse the Congress and rule the state with its support at the same time. |
