Kamaal ‘molests’ history at Ganderbal | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 1: Lying is an art, some good people say. But telling lies is forbidden. However, some people have mastered the art of telling lies. When they display their art, not only the historians but history itself starts beating its chest. This is exactly what the newly appointed spokesperson of National Conference; Dr Mustafa Kamaal broke all records Tuesday while addressing a gathering at Omar Abdullah's constituency. Kamaal said, "To strangle the voice of Sheikh (Mohammad Abdullah) Sahib, New Delhi used overt and covert methods. But they failed as Sheikh Sahib refused to bow before them. He was offered chair of President of India to make the temporary accession of J&K with India final, but the great NC leader refused it," Kamal claimed. Kamala, it seems, is either unaware of the developments that led to Indra-Abdullah Accord or is feigning ignorance to mislead the future generation. Not to speak of the chair of President, Indira told him in clear terms to forget about pre- 53 position. "Let people of Kashmir call you Prime Minister but for all practical purposes you will be the Chief Minister of the state", he was told. The provision concerning restoration of autonomy to the state happens to be the concluding para of the Indra-Abdullah Accord. For Kamaal's information, Sher-e-Kashmir received the shock of his life the day he `ended his 22-year political wilderness". Indira Gandhi informed the Parliament about Sheikh's acceptance of her terms and conditions. As per an unwritten agreement, Indira Gandhi was not supposed to make the details public. Sheikh refused to take oath on February 25. According to Shabnam Qayoom, Indira Gandhi when informed about Sheikh's reluctance, urged the governor, LK Jha to allow Mir Qasim, who had submitted his resignation, to continue as Chief Minister. Gandhi also urged Jha to tell Qasim to follow her directions on Nedous Hotel Issue. The lease of the hotel had expired recently and the government had plans to lease it out to another party. Qayoom adds Mir Qasim persuaded Sheikh to attend the function. He agreed and later accused the media of misinterpreting some of the clauses of the accord. "I will apprise the people of the terms and conditions of the accord soon. No mention has been made about my correspondence with the Prime Minister", he said. Sheikh's correspondence with Indira Gandhi has been published by Shabnam in his Kashmir ka Siyasi Inqilaab, Vol 5. However, Sheikh has not made even a passing reference in his autobiography, Aatish-e-Chinar. The correspondence reflects Sheikh Abdullah's desperation. And last but not the least; Sher-e-Kashmir never said (after 1975) that accession was temporary. Even Farooq Abdullah never dared to issue such a statement. |
