Vocational training on mushroom production at KVK, Poonch

JAMMU, November 2 : In order to promote self employment and socio-economic status of the farmers of Poonch District, Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Poonch, a unit of SKUAST-Jammu, conducted a vocational training on "Mushroom Production".
A total of 15 farmers from 'different villages of the district participated in seven days training. The training was conducted in collaboration with department of Agriculture at Mushroom Production Unit, Jhallas.
During the training Dr Arvind Kumar Ishar, SMS of KVK elaborated all the aspects in mushroom production to the farmers which included compost making, spawning and casing.
Practical demonstration was given for each aspect by Dr Ishar and lnderjit Singh, AEO from the Agriculture Department. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Arvind emphasized on the role of such ventures in promoting self employment for rural youth especially in an era when it has become very hard to get Government jobs.
He said that a farmer can add this enterprise to his routine agriculture operation without much efforts and all the raw material required for the enterprise is readily available at his own farm.
He also told that even a marginal farmer with small land holding can add Rs 20 OOO to Rs 5O,OOO/- to his income by adopting this enterprise. Mushroom Production becomes more profitable in areas like Poonch as most of the demand in the district is met by the growers from Jammu.
Speaking on the occasion, Inderjit Singh, AEO & Incharge Mushroom Production Unit, Jhallas informed the farmers about different schemes run by their department for promoting Mushroom Production in the district.
Suneet Kour, a participating progressive farmer, informed that the training was of great use for them as they can start this new enterprise at their own farm and earn profit by making use of their own farm products. They thanked staff of KVK for imparting such an important vocational trainings for rural youth which will surely help the youth in starting their' own enterprise and providing employment to other unemployed people also.
