Jammu and Kashmir can't live together
AFSPA Controversy
11/3/2011 12:16:23 AM
Neha
JAMMU, Nov 2: The ongoing fierce debate on the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) once again establishes that the people of Jammu province can't live with the Kashmiri leadership. The people of Jammu province stand for empowerment and a dispensation that enables them to manage and administer their own socio-economic and politico-administrative affairs themselves unhindered and independent of Kashmir. There should be no doubt it. It is also clear that the people of Jammu province, who have consistently suffered at the hands of the Kashmir-centric and Valley-based leadership during all these 64 years of accession, want to link their political fate with India, for better for worse, notwithstanding the New Delhi's discriminatory policies towards them. Their watchword is total integration into India and their battle-cry national unity and empowerment within India and under the Indian Constitution. In other words, the needs, aspirations and compulsions of the people of Jammu province are different and the same just can't be accommodated by the existing politico-constitutional and administrative set-up, as it is under those who are anti-Jammu by conviction.
As for the Kashmiri leadership, it stands for an ideology that is not consistent with the ideology the people of Jammu province profess. It is not based on the principles of accommodation, toleration and peaceful co-existence. It is based on an exclusivist approach and hatred for all other disciplines and religious beliefs. The ideology the Kashmiri leadership professes and seeks to force down the throat of the unwilling people of Jammu province is, in other words, primitive, regressive and essentially anti-India.
JKPCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz was absolutely right when he only the other day accused Chief Omar Abdullah and National Conference leadership of taking recourse to "sectarian politics". It is a different story that he only singled out Omar Abdullah and the NC. One can understand his limitations. The fact of the matter is that all or nearly all the Kashmiri leaders stand and work for an exclusivist and essentially anti-India ideology. The demands being put forth by the Kashmiri leaders like the right to self-determination, independence, greater autonomy, self-rule, demilitarization, revocation of the AFSPA, to mention only a few, all indicate their hatred and contempt for India and things Indian and this is what the people of Jammu province hate from the core of their heart.
The Kashmiri leaders have been putting forth these demands ever since 1947, notwithstanding their complete domination over the state's politico-administrative and social and economic institutions, and the people of Jammu province have been consistently striving to controvert their pernicious influence. To be more precise, the Kashmiri leadership and the people of Jammu province belong to two different schools of thought. Since they belong to different schools of thought, Jammu and Kashmir can't be forced to live under one unified system. Hence, the best course would be to separate Jammu from Kashmir.
Such a separation would be in the interest of the people of Jammu province, the people of Kashmir province and the nation. It would enable Jammu to achieve what it has been seeking to achieve since 1947 and it would enable New Delhi to start parleys with Kashmiri leaders of all hues, including those representing the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus, to find what could satisfy them. In other words, the segregation of Jammu from Kashmir would limit the area of strife to the very small Valley. Why should the people of Jammu province suffer at the hands of the Kashmiri leadership which has little or no regard for their sentiments?
