| Family rule tradition in NC is stronger than in PDP | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 2: When Mehbooba Mufti was elected unopposed on Monday as President of the main opposition PDP for the third consecutive time number of political leaders in the National Conference were quick to treat it,in private,as nothing but a symbol of dynastic or family rule in the organisation.
A senior NC leader said that ever since the PDP was established in Kashmir in 1999 it has been headed by either Mufti Mohd.Sayeed or by his daughter,Mebooba.But the same NC leader's face flushed when he was reminded if there has been any political party that has perpetuated dynastic or family rule it is the National Conference.
Since 1939,when the National Conference was established in Srinagar,it has been headed by Sheikh Abdullah and he passed on the mantle of party Presidentship to his son,Farooq Abdullah, in 1980 who handedover the "baton" to his son,Omar Abdllah.
In comparison to the PDP the pull of family rule is stronger in National Conference where at a time one brother,Farooq Abdullah headed the NC as well as the Government,and the other brother,Mustafa Kamaal,was a member of the cabinet headed by his brother.A stage has come when Farooq Abdullah is a member of the union cabinet ,headed by Manmohan Singh, and heads the National Conference and his son is Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Atleast the PDP can boast of having elected Muzaffar Hussain Baig,who is not a member of the Mufti family,as PDP chief when Mufti Mohd.Sayeed was sworn in as Chief Minister in 2002.However,the party president's mantle fell on the shoulders of Mehbooba after Baig was inducted in the cabinet .
National Conference has never opted for one man for one post principle.Sheikh Abdullah headed the party and the Government for several years.The same tradition was followed by Farooq Abdullah.Interestingly the NC leadership did not allow any leader from outside the Sheikh dynasty to function as general secretary of the party.For the last about three decades Farooq's first cousin Sheikh Nazir has been functioning as general secretary of the National Conference.
Finding Sheikh Nazir's health was not as fine as it was Dr Farooq Abdullah appointed his brother,Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal,as Additional General secretary and spokesman of the National Conference.It was not because of any dearth of leaders in the NC that had motivated Farooq to instal his brother as additional general secretary and spokesman it was simply the outome of is urge to perpetuate family rule in the organisation.
Against this the PDP has appointed Naeem Akhtar,a former bureaucrat having no relation with the Muftis,as the party's chief spokesman and a noted cancer surgeon,Dr Sameer Kaul,as the party's spokesperson.
Credit needs to be given to Mufti Sayeed for having opposed any plan on inducting his daughr,Mehbooba in the cabinet he had headed for three years between 2002 and 2005 when he could have accommodated his daughter wihout a whimper in the party.
Mehbooba is the first woman to head a premier mainstream political party.It has been the result of her fighting spirit that she has been instrumntal in the growth of the PDP.If the PDP had won 16 Assembly seats in 2002 election it won 21 seat s in 2008 poll for which Mehbooba has been given the credit.(eom)
