Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 3: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President and former Union Minister Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz Thursday said Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) will go atomically if Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) is revoked.
"AFSPA is a temporary situation. It has to go and it will go automatically if DAA will go. I've raised only one question. Instead of saying I will finish it or revoke it, there should be proper consultation," Soz told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Anantnag.
PCC president said that he told Union Home Minister P Chidama-baram also that there should be consultation before revocation of AFSPA with all stakeholders. "He (PC) too said there should be consultation. Now it is not necessary that state Congress should be consulted. If Defence Minister of India and Home Minister agree on this I will accept," he added.
Asked to comment on National Conference leader Dr Mustafa Kamaal's recent allegation that New Delhi was behind grenade attacks in Kashmir, he said, "Our spokesperson from Jammu yesterday said such ideas are born in sick minds." Prof. Soz accepted demand of the areas and promised that these would be solved to their satisfaction.
He also sanctioned certain amounts of money for both the areas from his MP LAD funds. Prof. Soz told the people that the objective of the Congress party is to serve the people to its best ability and he said that he (Prof. Soz) sees a situation in Kashmir where people have started responding to call of Congress party rather, vigorously. He also said that he (Prof. Soz) has already geared up party's cadres in all the three regions to help the people in solving their problems.
Prof. Soz further said that one of the manifestations of People's positive response to congress party is largest number of Sarpanches and Panches in the state who have opted for their association with Congress party. Prof. Soz characterized this development as a positive shift in the thinking of the people in Kashmir.
On these occasions, Prof. Soz welcomed the decision by the Pakistan government to grant most favoured Nation (MFN) status to India and called it a good gesture towards India and the realization by Pakistan that its secured and prosperous future lies in friendship with India rather than in creating bickering on various issues.
Speaking on this occasion, Bashir Ahmad Magrey, Gulzar Ahmad Wani District President Anantnag and Anayatullah Rather District President Kulgam made an appeal to the people to join President J&K Pradesh Congress in his (Prof. Soz's) clarion call to the Congress cadres to make the Congress party strong, by the day, as a tool of service to the people.
Meanwhile, a meeting of District Congress Committee Jammu Urban was held under the presidentship of Om Chopra-Ex-MLA and freedom fighter here today to discuss prevailing political scenario in the state. Meeting rubbished the wild, baseless and politically motivated allegations by National Conference against Congress leadership and strongly condemned distortion and misrepresentation of historical events.
Meeting reminded the National Conference leadership that they did not pose any question when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was handed over power in 1975 in furtherance of the 1975 Accord, despite Congress enjoying 2/3 majority in the assembly and Congress also vacated two assembly seats to accommodate Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and Mirza Afzal Beg.
Meting also discussed the resentment over the new recruitment policy announced by state government and urged the party leadership and state government to further deliberate upon the policy and demanded that it should be put on hold till then. Prominent among those who spoke in the meeting included Inder Sehgal, Kirtan Singh, V.K. Sethi, S. Gurdarshan Singh, Ch. Sukhdev Singh, Madan Lal Malagar, P.S. Chouhan and others.
