Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 3: Congress General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi , the iconic leader who is being projected as country's future Prime Minister, it appears has different yardsticks and parametres in guaging problems and assessing the gravity of the political situation in two different states. For he is quite alert and active to what he sees in a state like UP and simply shuts his eyes in a sensitive state like J&K, no matter the severity and sensitibilties of the issues are far grave in this state.
It looks paradoxical when he says he is pained to see the people of Uttar Pradesh in distress. Up is a state where he tours and travels very often and therefore one can understand he has felt the nerve of these problems 'politically' as well as genuinley. One is prompted to appreciate the sensitive nature of youth leader as politicians normally remain insulated to the distress and problems of the people unless they have something to bargain. Rahul for some time has been showing keen interest in J&K as well which was demonstarted practically when he recently visited the state and met a number of delegations. The purpose as given to understand by the leadership was to take assessment and stock of the general situation, functioning of the coalition government of which Congress is main ally besides gauging the mood of his own party post Panchayat polls in the state.
So far so good, as the intentions were indeed noble and Rahul did stick to the itenerary of his visit. During the course of his meetings or visits to places, he was told all is not well in so far as the ties between coalition partners were concerned. He was also conveyed strongly both in Jammu and Srinagar by none other than the elected panches and Sarpanches that people at the ground level strongly aspire for change in guard and that people were not happy the way NC is conducting itself while ruling the state. Youth cadres put before him the set of won problems under NC led regime. Rahul Gandhi did register all these problems in his mind only to forget the moment he reached New Delhi. It has been over a month and he has yet to make any statement about J&K , not to speak of any action from that end. Even during his visit to the state, J&K was stormed with the crisis of custodial death, NC and CM being at the centrestage of controversy but Rahul has yet to make any statement on the issue.
However, he has more often than not been expressing concern and statements over small things in UP. Yesterday he expressed grief over the plight of carpet weavers in Bhadohi. Rahul saw acute shortage of power and potable water. "I get angry every time I visit UP", he said.
Rahul's concern for poor and destitute in UP is highly appreciable. But, the future Prime Minister of India did not feel worried during his visit to Jammu Kashmir, the reports of mis-governance, corruption and under-development.
Rahul, however, came to the point a few minutes after getting angry at Bhadohi. He urged the people to vote for Congress in the upcoming Assembly Elections in the State. In J&K his yardsticks are different.
