'My father's brother putting me in a difficult situation'
Omar's Grouse Or Part Of Strategy.....?

JAMMU, Nov 3: "Dr (Sheikh Mustafa) Kamaal is not only a senior leader of our party (NC) but he also happens to (be) my father's (Farooq Abdullah's) brother. His statements against army and Congress put me in a very difficult situation. I have told my father several times to advise Dr Kamaal not to issue such statements. He can criticise the opposition and separatists but not army and our coalition partner". Who used this what could be legitimately described as impolite language against Kamaal? The nephew and chief minister Omar Abdullah used this impolite language. Does what he said indicate his utter contempt for his uncle? On the face of it, yes he has utter contempt for his uncle. With whom did he share his feelings? He shared these feelings yesterday with Burkha Dutt of the NDTV 24X7, who flew to Srinagar the other day to interview him and know his views on the AFSPA and where did he go wrong.
Should we agree with what Omar Abdullah said in the interview? It is difficult to agree with him. For, it appears both the chief minister, Omar Abdullah, and his uncle, Mustafa Kamaal, are working in tandem as per the strategy the trouble-shooters in the otherwise highly unpopular, out-on-the-limb and anti-people and anti-state NC have evolved with a view to killing several birds with one stone. They want to kill the Congress because the responsible JKPCC president, Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, and his men have upped the ante and rejected out-of-hand Omar Abdullah's stand on the AFSPA on the ground that the chief minister's move, if allowed to be fructified, would endanger the national security and create safe heavens for the dreaded terrorists and separatists in Kashmir and other parts of the state which Omar Abdullah wanted to be kept out of the purview of the AFSPA.
Anyway, Omar Abdullah has eaten his words saying what he announced on October 21 was only "his intention" and "not decision" and that he would now move forward only after he evolved a consensus on the issue after holding discussions with the Unified Command, the cabinet ministers and the state governor. The poor Omar Abdullah!
As mentioned, Omar Abdullah and Mustafa Kamaal are working in unison to kill several birds with one stone. They not only want to kill the Congress and rule the state with the help of the latter simultaneously, but they also want to kill the PDP, their main political rival in the Kashmir Valley. The NC has little support-base in Jammu and Ladakh because the people of these two provinces hate and despise the NC leadership and what it stands for. They want to kill the PDP because the latter has over the period created for itself a stable constituency in the Valley, once the stronghold of the NC. Remember, in 2008, the PDP captured more seats and got more votes in Kashmir as compared to the NC and the prevailing environment in the Valley suggests that the PDP would win the election hands down as and when held in the state. The PDP has been successful in exploiting the weaknesses, the failures and the various acts of omission and commission committed by the NC-led government in the state. The PDP leadership has, it appears, succeeded in influencing the Kashmiri opinion and created an impression across the state that the NC is the main culprit; that it is the mother of all ills afflicting the state, the society, the polity and the economy; and that the state's salvation lies in the destruction and demise of the NC.
The hatred of the NC towards the PDP needs to be viewed in this context. The trouble-shooters in the NC or the party strategists feel that the best course for the chief minister is to speak a language different from that of Kamaal and for Kamaal to take a very hard stand on the Congress, on New Delhi, on the Army and on such laws as the AFSPA, the Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) and the Public Safety Act (PSA). Kamaal is indulging in rabble-rousing with a view to arousing popular passions in the Valley and Omar Abdullah is exploiting his official position to muddy the Indian waters in the state. It would not be an overstatement if someone may says so that Omar Abdullah is wrecking the state from within.
Remember, Kamaal is not the only leader in the NC who has been abusing the Congress and the Army and demanding revocation of the AFSPA. Two NC MPs Mehboob Beg and Ghulam Nabi Ratanpuri are also making provocative statements. For example, Ratanpuri said yesterday that "there are 'rogue elements' present in the army who want to operate outside the law…There were cases of Army officers being involved in 'terrorist activities'…Not all army-men are angels. We have seen some Army personnel involved in big crimes". Also remember, Omar Abdullah has never advised Beg and Ratanpuri to maintain cool. That he has never uttered a single word against Beg and Ratanpuri should establish that the language he used for his uncle was a part of the strategy. But the very fact that NC president Farooq Abdullah appointed Kamaal as additional general secretary and chief spokesperson of the party knowing full well his views on the Congress, New Delhi and the Army should leave none in any doubt that Kamaal's stature in the party was raised with a motive. Kamaal is only discharging the responsibilities he was charged with to the best of his ability and capacity.
The fact of the matter is that the nephew and the uncle are playing dangerous games to restore the ground the NC has lost over the period. But the problem is that the Congress high command has armed them with extraordinary powers. It is appropriate time for the Congress high command to respect the local sentiment and act accordingly. The local sentiment is against the NC and the local Congress leadership does represent that sentiment.
