Mufti makes Sagar talk about Panchayat empowerment | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Nov 4 : The Minister for Rural Development, Ali Muhamamd Sagar today talked about empowerment of Panchayats. Responding to PDP president, Mahbooba Mufti’s accusation that coalition government was not interested in empowering the newly elected Panches and Sarpanches, Sagar said Rs 1000 Cr MGNERA schemes shall be implemented through Panchayats. Sagar said the Panches and the Sarpanches will get identity cards and training to deal with financial matters. This is where PDP’s apprehensions of misusing the Panchayats lie. The move seems politically motivated, believes a Panch. In the garb of identity cards and training, NC will actually try to strengthen its vote bank. Pertinent to mention, the Panchayat elections were held on non-party basis but a good number of Panches and Sarpanches owe allegiance to PDP and other parties. Sagar, however, did not respond to Mahbooba’s remark that a better legislation that nothing has been done on ground to empower the panchyats than 73rd amendment in the Assembly to empower Panchyats. Sagar must have received a shock to know that the PCC chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz shares Mahbboba’s concern over empowerment of Panchayats.
