The Kathua goal-keeper, Arun, turned out to be true guard for the team after he successfully foil the opponent moves on the net in match time and later dodged the PG goal-keeper in tie-breaker. Invited for his turn for the fifth penalty shoot, he just flicked the ball to pierce through the right corner of the goal post, surprising the goal-keeper. Arun’s goal brought jubilation in the Kathua camp with whole team as also supports cheered to celebrate the thrilling victory. On the other hand PG Arts were in a dejected mood. Earlier, in the given time, PG Arts were leading by two goals in the first 20 minutes of the game with Digvijay Singh (13th) and Ranveet Singh (19th) sounding the board. But the lead was equalised by Kathua through Sahil Khajuria (26th) and Jagdev Singh (27th) by adding two goals in as many minutes. The PG Arts again went ahead with Amit Sharma scoring third goal in the 29th minute. However, after the breather, Kathua College played some offensive game and kept the ball moving to bring in an equalizer. It was in the 46th minute when they succeeded in their attempts to level the score 3-3 with Sahil Khajuria scoring his second goal. Finding the final undecided in the stipulated 70-minute game, the organizers applied tie-breaker rule wherein Kathua College emerged winner by converting three penalties against two by the opponents into goal. From winners, Kathua College, Vivek, Sumit and Arun were successful shooters while Sunil and Sahil missed. On the other hand, Ranveet Singh and Harvinder Pal could only dodge the goal-keeper while Rakesh, Sarbhjitt and Amanpreet failed in their attempts. He was accompanied by Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau and other officials of the department.
Blessing in disguise
The denial of K K Hakhu Astroturf Stadium to JU for holding inter-college hockey tournament by its custodian, State Sports Council, proved to be beneficial for colleges from district other than Jammu. It not only helped the GDC Kathua, GDC Poonch and GDC Hiranagar perform well on the grassy field but also halted the PG Arts move to retain the title. “Since the boys play and prepared for the inter-college competition on grassy field, it helped them dominate the opponents from city colleges, who, otherwise, have the exposure of playing on Astroturf,” an official of the GDC Kathua team told SAN. Even the hosts Directorate of Sports cherished to hold the event on grass after a gap of five years. “Since the inter-university competition, hosted by Aligarh Muslim University, would be held on grass field, it will certainly help our boys excel,” said incharge of the inter-college tournament and JU’s hockey coach, PD Singh.
