Farooq proposes, Kamaal disposes
Attack On Congress
11/4/2011 11:39:35 PM
Neha
JAMMU, Nov 4: NC president and union minister for renewable energy Farooq Abdullah, who is trying his level best to ensure his son Omar Abdullah's victory over those in the Congress who have been demanding his removal after he competes three years in office, yesterday advised his brother Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, who happens to be the party's additional general secretary and chief spokesperson, that he should exercise restraint and not speak against the Congress and the Army. His advice came after Kamaal launched a no-holds-barred vilification campaign against the Congress and the Army, as also against New Delhi (in this case India). He told Kamaal not to air views which are not consistent with the party line.
As mentioned today in these columns, Farooq Abdullah's so-called advice to his brother was nothing but a desperate attempt on his part to mislead and hoodwink the Congress party; an advice which Kamaal was unlikely to pay any heed to. It happened and it happened the same day. Kamaal took no time in telling the people that he stood by what he said at Kulgam, Ganderbal and Srinagar during the last few days and that he would continue to speak what he called "the truth". He again spoke "the truth" yesterday itself at Anantnag while addressing media persons.
What did Kamaal say at Anantnag on the day Farooq Abdullah asked him to maintain cool? He, among other things, said: "Everybody is angry with him as he speaks the truth. It is not the centre but the state Congress which wants a rotational chief minister. Prime minister and other central leaders have already made it clear that Omar Sahib is chief minister for full six years but it is state Congress which rakes up the issue of rotational chief minister…Every statement of his is based on facts. Truth is always a bitter pill and when I speak truth every one gets angry with me…There is no need of AFSPA in any of the areas of the state now. Keeping the law in force in the state has no legal justification and should be revoked from certain parts in the first phase. Once the act goes from some areas, the central government should seriously consider lifting of the same from the entire state…New Delhi must restore the autonomy to the state…"
The meaning of what Kamaal said yesterday at Anantnag was loud and clear: He would not change his stance; he would continue to speak "the truth" or that he would continue to attack the Congress, the Army and New Delhi, come what may. That Kamaal continues to hold the two crucial party positions - additional general secretary and chief spokesperson - notwithstanding his insistence that he would continue to attack the local Congress leadership, the Army and New Delhi should leave none in any doubt that whatever he has been saying since days now has the tacit support of Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. How else should one describe his continuation as additional general secretary and chief spokesperson? Had Farooq Abdullah really meant what he said, he would have surely by now thrown Kamaal out of the party. That he has not done so should clear all the cobwebs of confusion and establish that the three Abdullahs are working in unison.
Why the way, what is the party line? The NC stands for the withdrawal of the AFSPA. Kamaal says the same thing. The NC stands for the withdrawal of the Army. Kamaal says the same thing. The NC stands for the withdrawal of all the central laws from the state. Kamaal says the same thing. The NC says that the accession with India was conditional. Kamaal says the same thing. The NC stands for semi-independence. Kamaal says the same thing. The NC is against the demand seeking rotational chief minister. Kamaal says the same thing. What is the difference between the NC line and what Kamaal has been saying? There is no fundamental difference.
What, then, is the conclusion? Even a naïve can draw a right conclusion.
