Divide between NC & Congress complete
Ending Uncertainty
11/5/2011 11:45:31 PM
Neha
Jammu, Nov 5: The divide between the two coalition partners NC and Congress is almost complete. True, the JKPCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din has softened his stand saying everyone now talks of consensus on the AFSPA row. Also true, the cornered and isolated Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has eaten his words and sought to end the controversy by saying that what he hinted at on October 21 was only his "intention" and "not decision", thus giving the people to understand that nobody should take him and his suggestions seriously. It is obvious that certain elements in the Congress high command and the NC have played some role to make the JKPCC president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hold their horses and not make any statement that could bring a bad name to the otherwise miserably failed coalition.
Notwithstanding the some change in the attitude of the JKPCC president and the Chief Minister, things have not really changed on the ground. The NC additional general secretary and chief spokesperson and the Jammu-based Congress spokesperson, besides his colleague and senior vice-president and the district-level Congress leaders, continue to wash their dirty line in public and leveling serious charges against one another.
Yesterday, the NC spokesperson again ridiculed the JKPCC president and defended what he had said about the Congress between October 25 and November 3. He asserted that neither the NC president nor the Chief Minister has disapproved of what he said. In other words, he only vindicated those who had been consistently saying that "all the three Abdullahs have been working in tandem" and that "Mustafa Kamaal was elevated to the position of additional general secretary and chief spokesperson with a motive". "Kamaal's contribution to the party was recognized and appreciated and he was rewarded for that contribution," had been the upshot of the Abdullahs-watchers. What the NC chief spokesperson said yesterday was an indication that he would continue to take on the Congress.
The Congress spokesperson, who hitherto had hardly spoken, also yesterday used a very strong language against his counterpart in the NC. Denouncing the NC spokesperson, the Congress spokesperson said: "Since the inception of NC-Congress coalition government in the state, Dr Kamaal has been issuing such statements in the same tone and tenor and had been repeating this time and again. The advice of Dr. Farooq Abdullah, on one or two occasions, has not served any purpose in the past also. Rather, the general perception in the public is that he (Dr. Kamaal) has been rewarded for his these activities and assigned the duty of official spokesman of National Conference and now Dr Kamal simply understands that the job of spokesman is always to keep his mouth open, that too against the coalition partner…In view of this, Dr Abdullah's regrets won't serve any purpose for the cadres of Congress party who know that Dr Kamaal has always his foot in the mouth and would continue to do so."
The Congress spokesperson was not the only one who took on the NC spokesperson. Another senior Congress leader rebuked the NC spokesperson and said: "This is simply not done that National Conference despite being an alliance partner, it is spreading hatred against Congress upon which it is totally dependent for its survival. Ironically this all is a family affair as the main faces of its three-pronged strategy are the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and his sibling and former minister Dr Mustafa Kamaal. While the first two faces make reconciliatory gestures, it is the third face which is the major irritant…Last year he claimed that his father and NC patriarch Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah wanted to die in prison to fight last war with India as he had realized that New Delhi betrayed him, NC time and again. In July, 2010, when the Valley was on the boil, in the most objectionable way, he had described Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the extension of Congress while accusing it of fomenting trouble there. He had accused Congress and PDP of hatching a conspiracy to weaken NC in the Srinagar city. He did not stop there only…Although even that time Dr Farooq Abdullah had publicly admonished him (Dr Kamaal) for his statements, yet that admonition was too late and too little. In fact, he was promoted to the post of spokesperson".
It would be too much to say that what the Congress spokesperson and senior vice-president said yesterday were their personal views. These were not personal views. These were the views of the party. This means they enjoy the support of the JKPCC president. The Congress is not a party in which anyone can say anything. The Congress is a party in which only authorized persons speak and what they speak is always the party line.
There are reasons to believe that the war of words between the two parties would become bitter and bitter in the coming days. The votaries of rotational chief minister in the Congress are many and they would see to it that Omar Abdullah is ousted before January 5, 2012. They would certainly intensify the remove-Omar Abdullah-activities, may be behind the scene. Similarly, the critics of rotational chief minister in the NC are there to defeat the votaries of the rotational chief minister in the Congress. In fact, the NC president has already indicated his intentions by taking on the UPA government saying the recent hike in petrol price has created an awkward situation for his party. How would they go to the people and face them?, he yesterday asked. All in all, it can be said that the state would witness a state of uncertainty for at least two more months. It is obvious that the people and the governance would be the two immediate casualties. It is disgusting.
End the uncertainty and there is but only way in which this uncertainty can be ended and that is by breaking the wedlock between the unwilling partners. The initiative has to be taken by the Congress because it has been suffering. The NC would not take the initiative because it is exploiting the Congress to the hilt and harming its legitimate interests.
