Why is Sheikh Nazir silent? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 5: While National Conference is on boil, the veteran leader and General Secretary, Sheikh Nazir has preferred to remain mum for unknown reasons. Nazir woke up after more than three decades of hibernation two years ago to `give a separatist face' to the National Conference. He was seen kicking off NC membership drive from Budgam. For the first time in his political career, he was seen in political and social functions. But he has been conspicuous by his absence during the past one month when NC is in real trouble. Sheikh Nazir is known for his `separatist' tendencies. Barring 2009 air trip to New Delhi for treatment, he has never travelled by Indian Airlines as a mark of protest. He has never applied for Indian passport. He believes Jammu Kashmir is a disputed territory and no Kashmiri must seek Indian passport. Nazir was very active during the Plebiscite Front movement and was not liked by NC's seemingly `pro-Indian' leadership especially Sher-e-Kashmir and Dr Farooq Abdullah. However, Omar Abdullah tried to use him as a poster boy but could not get the desired results. Unfortunately for Nazir, his leaders chose to use him at a time when Kashmir had changed drastically. In today's Kashmir leaders like Syed Ali Geelani and Syed Salauddin have been made to explain their position during last year's summer agitation. According to insiders, NC is scared of Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) growing popularity in what used to be its strong bastion. PDP has the distinction of forcing NC to sit in opposition. This is a feat which the Janata Party of 1977 could not achieve. Nazir could help his organization a lot in contemporary times by playing the `separatist' card. But, the leadership chose to use Dr Mustafa Kamaal to hit hard at New Delhi and the Congress. Kamaal is challenging totality of accession. He also challenges Indra-Abdullah Accord but the public especially in Kashmir is totally indifferent. The quarters that discuss Kamaal's statements in saloons and passenger vehicles have a question to ask. Why is Sheikh Nazir silent? |
