Indian war machine fighting Pak-sponsored low-intensity proxy war splendidly
Revoking AFSPA

Jammu, Nov 5: The Indian war machine has been fighting splendidly the Pakistan-sponsored low-intensity proxy war in Kashmir since 1989. In the process, thousands of our dedicated and committed soldiers laid down their precious lives for the cause of the country fighting against Pakistan trained, indoctrinated and abetted dreaded terrorists and the process continues. We continue to receive body bags from the war zone. The proxy war which Pakistan launched against India to bleed and break it in the late 1980s continues unabated. In between, Pakistan set up dozens of terrorist-training camps on its own soil as well as Pakistan-occupied-Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the Army and intelligence sources, the number of such training camps is 42. Besides, according to the same sources, more than 2,000 terrorists are preparing themselves to enter India to intensify the break-India activities and cause anti-India upheaval, particularly in the already restive Kashmir Valley. Pakistan is desperate to annex Jammu and Kashmir and its fundamental objective is to establish its control over the invaluable state waters, which it requires to cater to its own needs and preserve its territorial integrity. Kashmiri leaders -- separatists and the so-called mainstream -- know it full well. They should have called the Pakistani bluff, but they have not done so. On the contrary, they have been giving overt and covert support to Pakistan, thus adding to the difficulties of India and making the task of the Indian Army all the more difficult. Kashmiri leaders, barring a few exceptions, have left none in any doubt that they believe in the two-nation theory and that they draw inspiration from Pakistan. JKPCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz perhaps the only Kashmiri leader who has said that nothing should be done that has the potential of endangering national security.
The worst part of the whole situation is the support the Pakistani anti-India formulations are getting from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and others of his ilk in the government and outside. In fact, it is they who have been creating serious difficulties for the Indian State in Kashmir. They have unleashed a vicious campaign against the Army. How else should one describe their demand seeking revocation of the AFSPA from certain areas in Jammu and Kashmir at a time when Pakistan appears determined to queer the Indian pitch in Kashmir by exporting terror and causing communal explosions in the state? And, what is even more frightening is the utter failure of the Prime Minister to rein in those in the state administration who have been willfully going beyond the confines of the Indian Constitution as well as the State Constitution and interfering in the defence-related matters.
The only silver-lining is that our Defence Ministry and the Army are working in unison and doing all that they could to defeat those in the state and New Delhi who have been toying with the idea of the state being demilitarized and excluded from the ambit of the AFSPA. They have put their foot down and told in unambiguous terms that they are vehemently opposed to what the Chief Minister and others of his ilk have been proposing to do. In fact, there are definite reports which suggest that the Army has told the Union Home Ministry that it would be difficult for the soldiers to operate in the areas which will be excluded from the ambit of the AFSPA and that the soldiers would be left with no other option but to return to the barracks, thus leaving everything to the care of the civil administration. The Army chief, General B K Singh, has, every knows, publicly stated that it is for the Home Ministry to take a final call, but as far as the Army is concerned, it has expressed its views in writing on the issue.
The views of the Army need to be appreciated. For, only the Army knows the ground situation. The need of the time is to strengthen and not weaken the security grid. Yet another need of the time is to isolate those in the administration who are poking their nose in the defence and security-related matters. This is what the concerned Indian nation wants.
